Today is National Native American day, and I thought it would be a great day to highlight one of my favorite native fish!

Anyone who was a kid with a rid and reel knows the joy of hooking your first blue gill. But what most people dont know is that Bluegill make surprisingly awesome pets.

They are interactive, incredible eaters, long lived and amazingly beautiful.

However there are several things to keep in mind before getting one of these guys.

The first is to remember that in many places blue gill are classified as a game fish. This means you cannot catch them and bring them home for your aquarium, there are many more reasons for this that we will cover in a different post but suffice it to say remember to get all of your stock from reputable breeders for the best success.

Its important to keep in mind that these guys are aggressive, especially around spawning time but there are always going to be a little spicy. I find them best as singe tank fish in a min of a 75 gallon tank (with a 125 or bigger preferred) and 25 gallons per fish for every one after that. If you are going to do groups, I would recommend groups of 6 or more with a heavy emphasis on females.

These things combined make blue gill a challenging fish to keep but, in my opinion, well worth it!

Bosephus got to spend the summer outside in a 270 gal pond. Unfortunately, his 200 gal tanked sprung a leak and I have yet to reseal it. With summer coming to a close Ive bumped up resealing the 200 on the to do list but if you are interested in giving him a new home send me a message for more information. Rehoming fee applies.

3 tips for less breeding
1)Keep temperatures on the colder end of the range.
2)Keep a more moderate feeding schedule, fish do not need to eat once a day.
3)Remove smaller hides or add predators like bettas to manage the population.
