Rotary International clubs across the globe sponsor a number of youth programs including a series of annual events known as the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy "RYLA".

RYLA is a transformative, five-day camp that fosters youth leadership and personal development, and promotes well-being through social connections.

On February 11th three campers from the Martin Luther King Day weekend RYLA camp in Prescott Arizona described their experience in working the ropes course, the dance competition, the team skits competition, the blindfolded conga-line through the maze, and many other camp activities focused on developing confidence and purpose in their leadership abilities.

RYLA brought these students together with others from all over our district for three days of development. The teams at the camp are typically “led” by our Rotary Youth Exchange students who are here from over a half a dozen different countries.

The Sedona Rotary Club wishes to thank Fernando Quisumbing, Avery Raczynski, and Maya Wooten for sharing their energy and experiences with us. The trio presented pictures of the various teams engaged in leadership skill building activities while having fun and building connections with other participant from across Arizona. The Sedona participants expressed their experience was very inspiring and provided an enriched opportunity to learn about themselves and how they can foster effective leadership within their own communities.

The Sedona Club would like to recognize Lena Gamble who served as a camp counselor, Jean Barton who is the engine for representing our club in organizing and getting everyone to RYLA and our Assistant Governor, Jennette Bill, for all that she does for the youth in Sedona.

Our guest speaker for Tuesday's meeting was, Brian Bergner, Development and Communications Director for the Verde Valley Sanctuary. He shared the vital work they are doing to provide a safe haven for survivors of abuse and violence. Brian highlighted the importance of their pet-friendly environment, which allows survivors to bring their pets, making the sanctuary a safe place for many more people. It is shame that the VVS is necessary, but we are grateful that it exists to serve those who need a safe refuge while they get back on their feet.
We were thrilled to see 80% attendance at our Tuesday meeting! Our members' dedication to Rotary is inspiring. We also appreciate the hard work of the Rotary Club of Sedona Charitable Fund Board as they prepare for a major fundraising event. Jean Barton shared that we are nearly halfway to our goal for the Wildcat Extended Day program, which supports the children of the West Sedona school. Let's keep the momentum going! The Charitable Fund board will be reporting regularly and is working on a kick-off event.

Congratulations to our own Timi Griffin for graduating from the Rotary Leadership Institute. We encourage everyone -- and particularly newer members -- to consider participating in this valuable program. It is a great education about Rotary and a great way to meet Rotarians from across the District.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to hold our annual Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off again this year. But we still need to raise funds to support our programs and services. We invite you to please support our Arizona Gives Day campaign "Together We Can." Your donation will help support critical services our club provides including: (1) Relieving Hunger--fighting food insecurity for low-income individuals in the Verde Valley; (2) Developing Youth--teaching high school students life-changing leadership skills and providing college and vocational scholarships so they can achieve their dreams; (3) Addressing Water Poverty in the U.S.--installing hot and cold running water systems for members of the Navajo Nation right here in Arizona; (4) Supporting Education--providing new, age appropriate books to preschoolers to set them up for success in life. We also support local organizations that help older adults retain in-home independence, protect victims of family violence, and promote peace and understanding.
Early AZ Gives Day donating has already started. To give now go to https://www.azgives.org/RotaryClubofSedona. Thank you for helping to make our community and the world better!

The Rotary Club of Sedona is #1 in its 5495 District for annual giving per capita for 2019-20. Our club, which averages about 30 members, raised just shy of $1,000 per person during the past year, through annual donations to Rotary Foundation, club fundraisers, and now leading phase 2 of Rotary's Navajo Water Project.
