A WHALE FALL DANCE PROJECT by Mayfield Brooks Accompanied by Camilo Camar.

June 9th - SUBTLE PLEASURES, OPEN HEART A DANCE LIBERATION WORKSHOP - 4pm to 6:30. Location: Sedona Dance Project Studio, 2160 Shelby Dr. #203 #203 Sedona, AZ 86336.

Workshop Synopsis: Subtle Pleasure, Open Heart: a dance liberation workshop

This workshop will explore somatic techniques, improvised dance scores, imagination, and symbolic actions that activate healing states by opening the heart. Opening the heart through movement and sound is a release from all that holds us back. The invitation is to dance your heart out!

Whale Fall (2021) is an award-winning experimental dance film by choreographer Mayfield Brooks, which won a 2021 Bessie Award (New York Dance and Performance Award). The film explores the decomposition of a whale on the ocean floor, blending themes of black life, ecology, and the afterlife of the carcass.

Project Synopsis:
dArK oXyGen is a sonic dance exploring choreographies of breath and the recent discovery of oxygen production in the deep ocean without sunlight or photosynthesis.
This project is inspired by ocean cosmologies from the Gglobal South, the spiritual connection between mayfield brooks' experience as child singer of Black gospel music, and dances that rely on breath to move the body and the voice. dArK oXyGen plays with the possibility that entering darkness is a generative process. It is an exorcism of the machines that mine our minds disconnecting us from the depths of our own psyches, and how that disconnection might be linked to the machines that mine our deep sea ocean ecosystems.
