THANK YOU to .s.forestservice Red Rock Ranger District Watershed Program Manager Kate Day for talking to the trail fund about how everything from trail design and maintenance to user recreation and trailhead facilities affect our local Oak Creek Water system, a pristine Arizona water source.

Most people see a closed trail.

The Forest Service sees a chance to heal the land.

What happens after a social trail is closed? How do native plants return? Can damaged soils recover? And what role do fences, boulders, and even cryptobiotic soil play in restoring the landscape?

In this short clip, Forest Service Watershed Program Manager Kate Day explains what success could look like over time in the Turkey Creek watershed—and why restoration is about much more than simply closing a trail.

We did it! The Red Rock Trail Fund's Trailkeepers Program celebrated 10 years of success last night with great food, drinks, views, and business friends old and new.

The Trailkeepers Program raised $720,000 for the .s.forestservice Red Rock Ranger District over the past decade and will begin the third pledge term in 2027.

So much gratitude to all our Trailkeepers, especially the ones who made last evening's event so wonderful:

Most people see a trail.

The Forest Service sees something bigger.

Why are some social trails being closed or re-routed in Turkey Creek? What do meadows, erosion, and Oak Creek have to do with it? And how can a single trail become a stream during a rainstorm?

In this short clip, Forest Service Watershed Program Manager Kate Day explains why re-routes were necessary on Longshot.

Where do trails come from?

They don’t just appear on the landscape.

In this conversation, Lars Romig (VVCC) and Kevin Kuhl (Red Rock Ranger District) take you behind the scenes of how sustainable trails are planned, designed, and built in Sedona.

From identifying scenic viewpoints and sensitive resources to creating stacked loop trail systems that work for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, there’s a lot more trail architecture involved than most people realize.

The result? Better experiences, healthier landscapes, improved watershed protection, and trail systems that can serve our community for generations.

🎥 Watch this shorter excerpt to learn how thoughtful trail design shapes the future of recreation in the Red Rock Ranger District.

This is what sustainable trail building looks like.

Every feature you see has a purpose:
🪨 Rock steps to control grade + protect the tread
💧 Z-drains to move water off trail before it becomes erosion
🧱 Retaining walls to rebuild and hold the trail line
🌿 Naturalization to close social trails and restore the landscape

Nothing random. Just smart design to handle heavy use and harsh weather.

Huge shoutout to Summit to Sea Trails and the Red Rock Trail Crew for the craftsmanship, precision, and grit it takes to build trails that last.

This is how we turn impact into longevity. Check out our Bio or website: redrocktrailfund.org for more details on Doe and other projects on the Red Rock Ranger District.

UPSIDE DAWN — Progress 👀

Pictures of four massive finished rock sections… and this trail is already feeling iconic.

Upside Dawn will be a 4.1-mile signature traverse in the Turkey Creek Trail system, linking multiple segments into one continuous route.

Built by ACE crews and the Red Rock Trail Crew through washes and heavy rock terrain.

Exposed slickrock, huge views, and serious craftsmanship - the rock work out here rivals Doe, Cathedral, and the Hogs.

This one’s going to be special.

Different trails. Different users. Same love for the dirt ❤️

Out at Longshot in the Turkey Creek Trail System, we caught up with a few of the folks helping build what they ride, run & hike:

🐎 Chip: Back Country Horsemen of Central Arizona (Trail Keeper) - out working with his son and excited about the future of the trails he rides
🚵 Nicole: VVCC member (Trail Keeper) - stoked for 3rd Rock and the growing backyard network
🏃 Chris - trail runner who loves Sedona miles, especially 3rd Rock and Upside Dawn.

Hikers, bikers, runners, equestrians - this system exists because all trail users show up.

Some volunteer.
Some donate.
Many do both.

Building trails is a community effort, and support for your trails helps turn days like this into miles we all get to enjoy.

Trails don’t build themselves - people build them.

Turkey Creek Trail System Update

The work is moving fast.

Hyena – 0.9 miles
After Third Rock wrapped up, crews shifted to Hyena. The first volunteer day was January 16, and by January 24 most of the tread was in. On January 30, volunteers tackled major rock projects-armoring drains, setting ramps and locking in edges so the trail sheds water instead of unraveling.

Seven big rock features remain, with the Red Rock Trail Crew targeting completion mid-March to early April.

Upside Dawn – 4.1 miles
This is the backbone climb of the new system - and it’s the heavy lift. ACE crews began mid-January and are working alongside the Red Rock Trail Crew from the Lion King junction upward. The terrain crosses multiple washes, which means slow, careful stone work to keep water where it belongs.
➡ 1 mile completed

What’s new & upcoming:
• Giddy Up – 0.5 mi – adoption with small realignments connecting Turkey Creek to Del Sol through the saddle of School Bell Rock & Napoleon’s Tomb
• Pony Up – 0.25 mi – adopted connector from Longshot (Turkey Creek Alt.) to the Upside Dawn/Lion King/Hyena junction
• Pedal Up – 0.25 mi – new bike-optimized climbing route linking Longshot (Turkey Creek Alt.) to Upside Dawn (not recommended for equestrians)
• Longshot – 1.1 mi (formerly Turkey Creek Alt.) – adoption with significant reroute to protect sensitive soils & cultural resources

Every stone you see here is placed for a reason: safer trails, healthier watersheds, and trails that last decades instead of seasons.

🗓 Join an upcoming Turkey Creek workday
• Saturday, Feb 21 – Verde Valley School
• Friday, Feb 27 – Turkey Creek West TH
• Saturday, Mar 7 – Women’s TW Day – Verde Valley School (9:00am start)
We’ll be working on one of the trails mentioned above - come help shape the next mile.
