Science is one of the best tools available to humanity for understanding the complexities of the unknown and of life on earth. NOAA (the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States) is arguably the most advanced utility for the investigation of natural systems, yet a new 2026 budget has been presented with cuts to NOAA exceeding 1.6 billion US dollars: an administration that has provided research and information to inform our understanding of weather, changing systems and impacts, emergency response, forecasting, air and water circulation, temperature change, and so much more.

True Ocean Value

About this Episode:
How do we value nature? How do we price it and define its asset value? This week we're looking to a recent report issued by the UK Office of National Statistics to provide illustration of four ocean functions that underlie our capacity to sustain life on Earth. The ocean’s contribution to the past, present, and future of the world economy and civilization is the core principle for real calculation of the value of natural capital and its relation to human endeavor. Part one of a series of new ideas, technologies, theories, and innovations that contribute to a larger public awareness of the need for new financial approaches that will enable change, sustainability, and survival in the future.

The UN World Oceans Day has announced the 2026 theme:
REIMAGINE: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with our Ocean.
Learn more about this year's theme at https://unworldoceansday.org/

From UN World Oceans Day:
"For the first time in a generation, humanity has chosen to govern a significant part of our shared ocean together. The entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement [aka the High Seas Treaty] is not the end of negotiation but the beginning of a transformation that no treaty alone can complete. asks us to close that distance together. To move from passive inheritors of the ocean’s generosity to active guardians of its future. To govern not just beyond our borders but beyond our blind spots, beyond the habits of taking, operating in silos, and the belief that the way things have been is the way they must remain."

World Ocean Day is June 8th. Stay informed:
