Election Day is Next Tuesday — Vote YES on Prop A!

As Election Day approaches, we want to remind our neighbors why we’re supporting Prop A and why it matters for Sedalia.

Right now, local residents and small businesses pay a 5.0% City electric utility tax on their electric bills, while certain large industrial customers receive reduced tax rates. Proposition A would lower the general tax rate and eliminate those reduced rates so everyone pays the same 4.75% rate.

Prop A does this:

Lowers your electric bill tax: Reduces the City electric utility tax from 5.0% to 4.75% for local homes and small businesses.

Creates one equal tax rate: Eliminates the reduced tax rates for certain large industrial customers so everyone pays the same 4.75% City electric utility tax.

Helps support public safety: Maintaining stable City funding helps ensure our local fire and police departments have the personnel, equipment, and resources they need to respond when you call 911.

Polls are open Tuesday, August 4, from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Why we are voting YES on Prop A

Nobody likes paying extra taxes—especially on basic stuff like electric bills. That’s why we want to clear up what Prop A actually does and why we are behind it.

Right now, everyday residents and small shop owners pay a 5.0% city utility tax on electric bills. Meanwhile, the biggest industrial corporations in town have special tax caps that allow them to avoid paying the full amount.

Prop A levels the playing field:

It lowers YOUR rate: Cuts the residential and small business tax rate from 5.0% down to 4.75%. That’s an instant reduction on your monthly bill.

It removes tax caps for big industry: It gets rid of the special tax caps and exemptions for large corporations.

It makes it equal across the board: Everyone—from a single-family home to the largest industrial plant—pays the exact same flat 4.75% rate on what they use.

What does this have to do with public safety?

When big industry gets special tax caps, the city loses out on revenue, putting pressure on essential services like fire and police. Removing those tax caps keeps city funding steady. That steady funding keeps emergency services fully staffed, equipped, and ready to respond when you call 911.

Lower tax rates for local families, no more tax caps for big industry, and a safer Sedalia.

Understanding Proposition A

We’ve seen some confusion online about Proposition A, so we wanted to share a simple explanation of what it would do.

A YES vote on Proposition A would:

• Lower the City of Sedalia electric utility license tax from 5.0% to 4.75%, resulting in a reduction in the city tax portion of residential and most commercial electric bills.

• Eliminate the special reduced tax rates and exemptions currently provided to certain large industrial electric users.

In short, residents and most businesses would see a reduction in the city utility tax on their electric bill, while the largest industrial users would no longer receive special tax treatment.

A YES vote ensures everyone contributes their fair share equally and helps support the essential services that benefit our entire community.

Help us congratulate Local 103 member and Sedalia Firefighter Tony Erwin on his victory at Kansas City Guns and Hoses boxing event. Tony helped raise more than $600,000 for the SAFE organization that helps local first responders family’s in the event of a line of duty death.

We want to thank Mayor Traves Williams and Mayor Pro-Tem Tina Boggess for inviting representatives from Sedalia Professional Firefighters Local 103 to speak at tonight’s council meeting regarding staffing shortages within the Sedalia Fire Department.

Strong, cooperative labor relationships are the foundation of progress, and we appreciate the opportunity to have productive conversations about the future of public safety in our community. We look forward to continuing to work together to address these issues moving forward.
