The mission of the Habitat Corridor Project is to create linked conservation islands throughout the urban environment in California. We do this by replacing lawns and traditional water loving landscapes with drought tolerant California native plants that are locally propagated wherever possible. We also provide sources of food cover and water to the fauna California within these landscapes.

We had a fantastic time teaching a workshop on California native plant maintenance this Saturday at the Windsor Senior Center and the Michael A. Hall Pollinator Garden. After the slideshow portion inside, participants got their hands dirty pulling weeds and exploring the garden up close.

We covered key seasonal maintenance techniques—including pruning, irrigation monitoring, trimming grasses, mulch and soil amendments to help keep native gardens healthy and resilient.

We also learned to identify new plants, searched for seeds that hadn’t already been snacked on by local birds, and witnessed a whole ecosystem unfolding on a single milkweed plant. These powerhouse natives don’t just support monarchs; they also feed aphids, which in turn attract hungry lady beetles. A living food web in action!

We also saw hummingbirds and dragonflies. Come check out the pollinator garden and see which pollinators and blooms you can spot, and let us know in the comments.
