The Sebastopol Times keeps you informed about local news and events in Sebastopol and West County.
It’s a rather plain way of saying what we do. We keep you informed every day through email by sending stories about the place where you live and what’s happening here. It’s strictly local news, but it’s hardly plain or boring. In fact, it’s fascinating, just like seeing a plant that looks so extraordinary in the right light that you have to take its picture.
Local news does much more than keep you well informed, however. It fosters community. I was struck by the remarks of Fifth District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins in yesterday’s story on the opening of the Habitat for Humanity’s Blankenship Place in Sebastopol.
“I want each and every one of you to know that not only are you welcome, not only do you belong, but you are cherished and you are honored and you are part of our community.”
It’s an important thing to say, hear and feel in our community, not just for newcomers but also long-time residents. We want to live in the kind of place that cares for us and for other people. We want to get to know each other and know what’s going on that’s important. That’s what a local newspaper can do for a place (and yes, we like using the term “newspaper”.)
Make no mistake, we love doing what we do but what makes it possible are the subscribers who pay us — that pays for the reporting, writing and editing behind all these stories. Thanks to all of our paid subscribers, we can also share the Sebastopol Times even with those who can't afford to pay.
