DESCRIPTION
Welcome friends. Thanissara here. Let’s pause to recognize the devastation and heartbreak for families, friends and extended communities of those killed by gun violence. Already this year, here in the U.S. 39+ gun massacres have destroyed many lives, while the unlawful murder of Tyre Nichols highlights the increased militarized unaccountability of policing. The two events are not unrelated.
It’s easy to become desensitized, but averting our gaze normalizes systemic violence. Instead, what is needed is a deeper and fuller awareness of the levels of violence incurred to sustain white supremacy, inequality, and unchallenged political agendas that are weaponizing fear, division, and ignorance primarily against historically vulnerable and oppressed communities.
As part of increasing awareness, we offer this session, which includes a Sangha sharing circle hosted by Michele and David, participants in the Dharmapala Training, followed by the Kuan Yin Compassion Ceremony. David Cabrera, is a teacher at Insight LA POC, One Dharma and Cloud Sangha. Michele Ku, is a Community Teacher and Family Sangha Coordinator at East Bay Meditation Center.
Welcome to Michele, Community Teacher and Family Sangha Coordinator from East Bay Meditation Center. Thank you, Michele, for your words below, and for helping enable this event.
"I have entered the two-year Dharmapala Training to delve more deeply into the Kuan Yin Dharma for our collective awakening for the benefit of all beings. During the first retreat, Tyre Nichols, a Black 29-year-old father, was beaten to death by the police in Memphis. Two weeks later, we experienced mass shootings by two senior Asian immigrant men killing other Asian and Latino community members. These acts shock us to awaken.
The state-sponsored police killing of Black people continues. Gun violence and mass shootings continue. And in these latest horrific and tragic events, we are witnessing these men’s assimilation into agents of oppression in their own communities. I am called to respond to these devastating acts by collectively evoking the Great Compassionate Bodhisattva Kuan Yin to support the reclamation of our humanity. Let us gather in sangha and dedicate this ceremony to Tyre Nichols and all others affected by inner and outer violence."
