More than 1,000 volunteers have already registered for the International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 19 - and Martin County is almost at 100% site coverage.

Here are a few cleanup sites that still need volunteers:

• Santa Lucea Beach
• Shepherd Park
• St. Lucie Inlet State Park

Look closely at the Indian River Lagoon and you’ll find a world hiding in plain sight.

A seagrass meadow is a nursery for young fish. Oyster reefs become bustling underwater neighborhoods. A mangrove shoreline shelters birds, crabs and countless tiny creatures. Beneath the surface, an entire ecosystem is constantly moving, feeding, growing and changing.

Sometimes the best way to care about the Lagoon is simply to wonder about it.

What lives beneath the surface?
Where does that water go?
How old is that oyster?
Why are the birds gathered there?
What will we discover tomorrow?

Today we’re celebrating the unconditional love, joy, and companionship our four-legged friends bring to our lives! 🐶

As we enjoy time with our pups, let’s also do our part to protect the beautiful Indian River Lagoon. Picking up after your dog isn’t just about keeping our neighborhoods clean—pet waste can carry nutrients and bacteria that make their way into waterways and contribute to harmful impacts on lagoon health.

This program relies on citizen scientists’ water quality data throughout the region; based on 34 reports across 10 zones, looking at water clarity, dissolved oxygen, and salinity

The IRLNEP is thrilled to be a Park Champion at Riverview Park (right along the lagoon in Sebastian) for this year’s International Coastal Cleanup in Indian River County! 🌊

Led by Ocean Conservancy, International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer cleanup effort. Since 1986, 19+ million volunteers have removed 400 million pounds of debris worldwide!

In Indian River County, Connections Inc. has hosted ICC since 2022, bringing together 3,723 volunteers who have removed 14,945 lbs and 137,498+ pieces of debris. 🙌

We’re excited that Indrio Savannahs Preserve has reopened! The 18-month project reconnected the historic marsh system, and restored the freshwater marsh habitat inside the preserve.

The site, part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, encompasses 297 acres with three miles of trails and a 35-acre lake. A new pedestrian boardwalk provides visitors with easy access across the newly connected wetlands to the trails on the western side of the preserve.

The connection of the wetlands to the lake, which was a former sand mine, is designed to slow and treat stormwater using native vegetation before it flows south. A flow-way now links the northernmost areas of the county to Taylor Creek, which eventually leads into the IRL.

The native wetland plants added around the reconnected waterway, filters nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, while also creating a habitat for wildlife.

St. Lucie County’s Environmental Resources Department manages nearly 12,000 acres that are open to the public for passive recreation. These preserves were purchased thanks to a voter approved referendum in 1994, which provided the county with a $20 million bond that was matched with private and public grants, allowing the county to purchase $76 million worth of land for preservation.
