MAINE — A decades-old mystery is unfolding after a car was discovered at the bottom of Sebago Lake, leaving investigators searching for answers.

The vehicle, identified as a 1974 Camaro Z28, was found roughly 55 feet underwater in a channel between Frye Island and the mainland by underwater explorer Jason Smith. The car had no license plates, its windows were open, and the only item inside appeared to be remnants of an old tent.

Smith, who regularly scans Maine lakes using underwater drone technology, said he initially spotted what looked like a shadow before realizing it was a fully submerged car sitting on the lake floor.

Authorities with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office have since launched an investigation. Detectives were able to recover a partial VIN from the vehicle and, with help from the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles, reconstructed the full identification number in hopes of tracking down the original owner.

Officials say there are no records suggesting the car fell from a ferry, leading to speculation that it may have broken through the ice decades ago. Exactly when or how it ended up in the lake remains unknown.

When a salvage crew attempted to recover the vehicle, years of corrosion caused it to break apart due to its fragile condition after sitting underwater for so long.

Investigators say they are continuing efforts to identify the car’s history and determine what led to it ending up at the bottom of one of Maine’s largest and deepest lakes. 👀🌊🚗

The New England Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl after a gritty 10–7 win over the Denver Broncos in blizzard-like conditions Sunday afternoon in Denver. Drake Maye, in his second NFL season, rushed for 68 yards and scored New England’s only touchdown on a 6-yard keeper as heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and swirling winds turned the AFC Championship into a battle of field position and defense.

The Patriots trailed 7–0 before rallying, taking the lead on a third-quarter field goal following a long, clock-draining drive. Denver had chances late, but New England’s defense came up with a decisive interception in the final minutes to seal the victory. Under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel, the Patriots have now reached their 12th Super Bowl appearance and will play in Super Bowl LX on February 8 in Santa Clara, California. they will take on the winner of the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles, Rams. The Patriots are 6-5 in the Super Bowl, with their victories occurring in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, and 2018. 🏈🏟️❤️💙🤍

Patriots punch ticket to Divisional Round with dominant Wild Card win

FOXBORO — Playoff football is back in New England.

The New England Patriots earned their first postseason victory in seven years Sunday night, defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 16–3 in an AFC Wild Card showdown at Gillette Stadium.

Quarterback Drake Maye, making his playoff debut after a breakout 2025 season, played with poise and control as New England leaned on a suffocating defense. The Patriots set the tone early and never let go, holding the Chargers to just a single field goal on the night.

New England’s defense pressured and contained Justin Herbert throughout the game, shutting down explosive plays and forcing Los Angeles into repeated stalled drives.

In his first season as head coach, Mike Vrabel has guided the Patriots to a 14–3 regular-season record and a return to postseason relevance, completing a dramatic turnaround after years outside the playoff picture.

With the win, the Patriots advance to the Divisional Round and will host the winner of the Texans–Steelers matchup next Sunday at Gillette Stadium, with kickoff expected at either 3:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

January football is officially back in Foxboro. 🏈💙🤍❤️

Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery in connection with an alleged incident that occurred on December 2, according to Boston 25.

The charges surfaced after the New England Patriots defeated the New York Giants on Monday Night Football the day prior. Diggs, 32, has categorically denied the allegations.

In a statement released by the team, the Patriots said they are aware of the accusations and will continue to cooperate with authorities and the NFL as the legal process unfolds.

During a court appearance Tuesday, Diggs’ attorney requested that the police report be impounded and indicated discussions were underway to resolve the matter. A judge said a ruling would be issued soon.

“As we speak, they’re working to come to an agreement on that,” DiStefano said, according to Boston 25.

This remains an ongoing legal case.

Former Brown Physics PhD Student, Portuguese National, 48, Identified as Shooting Suspect

Authorities have identified the suspect in Saturday’s deadly shooting at Brown University and the killing of an MIT professor as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and a permanent resident from Miami, Florida.

Brown University President Christina Paxson said Neves Valente was a Ph.D. student in physics from fall 2000 through spring 2001. He took a leave of absence on April 1, 2001, and withdrew from the university on July 31, 2003. University officials emphasized that he was not a current Brown University student at the time of the shooting.

The shooting occurred Saturday inside Brown University’s Barus & Holley engineering building, where two students, 19-year-old Ella Cook and 18-year-old Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, were killed, and nine others were injured during finals week.

Law enforcement officials say Neves Valente was later found dead inside a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, ending a multi-state manhunt. Authorities say he was found with a satchel, two fi****ms, and additional evidence recovered from a vehicle believed to be connected to the investigation.

Investigators also believe Neves Valente was responsible for the fatal shooting of MIT professor Dr. Nuno F.G. Loureiro outside the professor’s home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Authorities say evidence collected across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire helped link the two cases. No motive has been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.

This remains a developing story. Updates will be shared as more information is confirmed.

A Rhode Island couple was killed Monday morning after their small plane crashed and caught fire on the median of Interstate 195 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Authorities identified the victims as Thomas Perkins, 68, and his wife, Agatha (Aggie) Perkins, 66, both of Middletown, Rhode Island. According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the couple was found in the fuselage of the aircraft and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the Socata TBM 700 single-engine turboprop had just taken off from New Bedford Regional Airport before going down around 8 a.m. The aircraft, registered to Easton Air LLC of Middletown, broke apart upon impact, with debris scattered into nearby woods.

A Massachusetts woman driving a silver Hyundai Sonata was also injured when a portion of the plane struck her car. She was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released. Her family says she’s “traumatized but OK.”

The crash occurred amid strong winds and heavy rain from a passing nor’easter, which brought gusts up to 40 knots. Aviation experts say the pilot may have been attempting to return to New Bedford Airport after encountering mechanical issues or turbulence.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.

Our thoughts are with the victims’ family and friends.

Wastewater testing on Nantucket Island has revealed co***ne concentrations 50% higher than the U.S. average, according to data released by local health officials.

Samples collected from the Surfside Wastewater Treatment Facility, which serves about 70% of the island’s 14,000 residents, showed more than 1,500 nanograms per liter (ng/L) of co***ne, compared with the national average of 1,000 ng/L.

The study, conducted between June 18 and July 28, also found traces of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and xylazine, along with prescription opioids such as codeine, morphine, and oxycodone. Levels of fentanyl and methamphetamine were below both national and regional averages.

Nantucket, known as a summer retreat for the wealthy, counts Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, actor Ben Stiller, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt among its prominent residents. Researchers plan to conduct additional testing in the winter, when the island’s seasonal population declines.

“I was struck by how high the co***ne levels were,” said Dr. Timothy Lepore, founder of Addiction Solutions of Nantucket. “I was surprised fentanyl was so low, because fentanyl is in everything. I thought fentanyl would be higher. I’m interested to see the results in winter, when people with large disposable incomes have left the island.”

Public health officials cautioned that wastewater drug monitoring is still developing and results can fluctuate.

“As this activity is still in its early stages, additional baseline data is needed to provide a clearer picture,” said Nantucket public health director Roque Miramontes. “For high-risk substances and opioids, a sustained increase over several weeks may be a stronger indicator for public health intervention.”

Samples are analyzed by Biobot Analytics, a Cambridge-based startup founded at MIT. 👀🚽🌊.

Is This the End for Shrine at Foxwoods?

Rumors are swirling that this weekend may be the final chapter for one of Foxwoods’ most iconic nightlife spots.

Here’s why:
🔹 Shrine has no shows listed after Sunday, August 31.
🔹 The last events on the calendar are the Wonka Balloon Drop Party (Aug. 29), SideFx (Aug. 30), and the R&B XO All White Party (Aug. 31).
🔹 The venue hasn’t added any new shows in months, fueling speculation that this weekend could be its last.

While Foxwoods has not made any official announcement, the silence beyond August is leaving many to believe the rumors are true.

Jon-Luke Evans, a Jamaican national and reserve officer with the Old Orchard Beach Police Department, has been granted voluntary departure by an immigration judge. The ruling lets him leave the country at his own expense and avoid a deportation order on his record.

Evans was arrested July 25 in Biddeford after federal agents flagged him for trying to buy a firearm. Immigration officials say he overstayed a visa issued in 2023, but Old Orchard Beach officials maintain Homeland Security’s own E-Verify system cleared him to work until 2030.

Town leaders insist they followed every hiring step, including background checks, fitness testing, and verification through federal databases. Federal officials, however, accuse the department of “reckless reliance” on E-Verify.

Evans, who was certified as a part-time Maine law enforcement officer just weeks before his arrest, remains held at the Wyatt Detention Center in Rhode Island while arrangements are made for his departure.

Authorities are investigating a tragic incident in Madbury, New Hampshire, after four family members were found dead inside their home Monday night.

State troopers were called to the residence on Moharimet Drive around 8:30 p.m., where they discovered the bodies of two adults and two children. Each appeared to have died from gunshot wounds. A third child, a toddler, was found alive and unharmed.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office says the case is being investigated as a possible murder-suicide, though the investigation remains active. Autopsies are scheduled for Wednesday, and the victims’ identities are being withheld until family members are notified.

Officials have emphasized that there is no known threat to the public, but residents should expect an increased police presence in the area as detectives continue their work.

A 19-year-old from Maine is facing serious charges after New Hampshire State Police say she was caught speeding 120 miles per hour on I-95 through Hampton Falls early Sunday morning.

Troopers say Chloe Marsh, of Waterboro, was driving a 2022 Honda Accord with two teenage passengers, ages 15 and 16, when she was stopped around 6 a.m. as part of a targeted speed enforcement operation.

Marsh is now charged with reckless operation, endangering the welfare of a child, and driving an unregistered vehicle. She’s due in Hampton District Court this October.

Police said more than 50 drivers were cited in just three hours, with 30 clocked at 90+ mph and five, including Marsh, topping 100 mph.

💸 Under current NH law, anyone driving 100 mph or more faces at least a $620 fine and a 60-day license suspension. Starting January 1, 2026, that penalty increases to a $930 minimum fine and a 90-day suspension. 🚨🚔🚙
