“I did free-writing all week - words, music, guitar, and effects, while experimenting with learning how to record to tape on a Tascam Portastudio. I gave myself plenty of free time to bike and hike around the peninsula and take in nature, inviting creative ideas to flow freely

My experience was wonderful- it was great to unplug from my city life in Portland," and open my mind to new ideas. I worked out a new song, wrote a lot of new words, and explored nature.” Artist-in-residence, Alex Arnold, mindparade.us

“During the first two days I was very explorative in my practice. I loosely drew without an intended direction and practiced various watercolor techniques. The remaining days I did more focused work and completed two pages of watercolor painted flowers. This was my first residency and I really saw the value that after a few days of being there. Being alone and working on my art allowed me to get into a flow that is hard to do at home in my day to day routine.

The most memorable part of my residency was on the second day going to the spa after working all day and feeling very proud of what I had done. The spa was such a beautiful addition to this experience.” Artist-in-residence, Monica Reynolds

Half Shadow:

For the past thirteen years Half Shadow, the songwriting moniker of Portland’s Jesse Carsten, has been unfurling an enigmatic, windswept music: equal parts earthen folk, supernatural rock and roll, and primal pop experiment. This is music made in celebration of life, synchronicity and the pervasive mystery that surrounds us. Half Shadow’s newest EP Wind Inside continues the project’s work, enclosing four new dream-lit songs, which are at once searching, finger-picked poems, and bare-skinned declarations of personal growth. Full of intimate images of real life process, and the archetypal poetry of grief, this brief recording—also Half Shadow’s first 7” record—still echoes with depth, begging for repeat listens across the seasons.

Floating Clouds:

Following in the Pacific Northwest songwriting tradition, Floating Clouds, the musical project of Alexandre Duccini, deftly blends folk, country, and rock sounds with experimental explorations—drone, found sound, even spoken word—creating unusual, welcoming sonic spaces in which gentle songs unfold. Alex sings with a quiet, measured, and meditative presence, up close and in your ear, secrets spilling. “With A Shared Memory,” the first album by Floating Clouds, shepherded into the world via Portland’s premier lo-fi label, Bud Tapes, showcased Duccini’s ability to combine americana and grungier sounds, and was celebrated by listeners near and far.

“We brainstormed and storyboarded on a big whiteboard while rain pitter-pattered. We wrote poetry in the tea trailer about tarot cards. We took our feelings and mysteries to the ocean and the garden spa to rest and steep, release and bloom. We even started the daunting process of shooting interviews and talking in front of the camera. We had the literal and figurative spaces and containers in the bus, by the sea, in an artistic community space to play pretty boundlessly with our project and we are very grateful. The natural setting of Sou'wester alone informed our work very much as well since the Pacific Northwest Coast is the natural region our film focuses on.” - Artists-in-residence, Emma & Berlin Snodgrass & Wagar-Kim, archive.org/details/
