Sou'wester Arts Sou’wester Arts is a 501c3 nonprofit that helps fund our art, music, and wellness programming with adults and youth.

Our mission is to spark personal and social transformation by providing opportunities for creative expression and exploration in arts. YOUTH PROGRAMS & ADULT WORKSHOPS led by Sou’wester Artist-In-Residence Instructors in dye-making, painting, screen printing, drawing, clay, woodworking, metal smithing, wildcrafting, zines, comics, photography and more! SUMMER CAMP weekly arts day camp in partnership with DJHCC. ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM gives reduced weekly rates for those who wish to devote themselves to their creative pursuits and offers paid teaching residencies for artist educators. ARTS & ECOLOGY CENTER is a is a gallery, studio, and maker space that ignites creativity and self-expression by exploring tools and processes in arts and ecology

ART TRAILER GALLERY is a 1960’s Aloha trailer transformed into a bright, white space to embody a traditional gallery. ARTS WEEK An annual event in March where The Sou’wester hosts 30+ artists and art collectives for a week of residency work, music, performances, and installations. RED BUS THEATRE A school bus turned microcinema. Now featuring a curated list of short films every day from 5p-9p. LIVE MUSIC SATURDAY NIGHT Almost every Saturday at 8pm we host a musical performance at our outdoor band stage or indoors if the weather is cool/blustery.

Did you know we have a theater in a bus?

Tucked away on the Sou’wester grounds, the Red Bus Theater is a cozy and unexpected little space dedicated to screening short films by local and visiting artists. Part cinema, part gathering place, it’s one of the many ways we share creativity and the spirit of the peninsula with our community and guests.

We host free quarterly film programming that is open to everyone, and we’re always looking for new work to feature. If you’d like to submit a film, visit our website to learn more:

“I spent less time working on *new* things than I had planned, instead taking the opportunity of having distraction free days to organize and hone recent works and then spending the evenings working on the new work. Wandering the grounds, having a sauna, being quiet proved transformative. I loved meeting having tea with some of the other artists staying during my time and hearing about their process', almost reaffirming my stay. “For a sweet immersive experience with the Wave Preschool across the pacific highway, I spent a morning with the kiddos creating a community portrait of them on the windows of the school, facing their outdoor courtyard. For my community portrait events, I have folks stand on one side of a sheet of glass or window and trace their sweet faces through the glass from the other side, eventually creating a mural of faces to show the community. Connecting with each person I draw, getting as close to either side of the glass as possible, it is such a sweet connecting experience that always leaves me feeling more hopeful for humanity & getting back in touch with vulnerability in the simplest of ways. Glances into this experience : one little girl growling & making funny faces through the glass at me while I drew her, one little boy smushing his nose into the glass & gazing at me, little ones encouraging others to be brave & participate, some on one side of the glass with me, getting cozy to experience the process from my perspective, others laughing and pointing out their friends on the glass. This season at The Sou'wester Lodge, art and film come together in two unique spaces.

In our Art Trailer Gallery, “Weaving Water” by Iris Sullivan Daire is an immersive fiber installation exploring our relationship with water through handwoven textiles, natural dyes, and participatory elements. The work invites us to consider water as both a life-sustaining force and a sacred presence worthy of protection and care.

In our Red Bus Theater, two films offer very different cinematic experiences: Retribution by Kenneth Lane and Paper Plain by Rana San and William Myers. Both films are free and open to the public, screening Sunday through Friday at 6pm.

Join us for an opening reception celebrating all three works on Thursday, August 27 from 5-7pm. Explore the Art Trailer Gallery and Red Bus Theater, meet the artists and filmmakers, and spend an evening with art, film, and community at The Sou’wester.

“I spent the time going inward and allowing myself the time to focus on my self and my art. It was so peaceful and wonderful. Now screening in the Red Bus Theater on the grounds 🎬

Two new films have arrived!
Showing Thursdays at 6 PM, Saturdays at 6 PM, (and by request to guests and the public).

Film 1: “Retribution” by Kenneth Lane
This was a short film we shot on the peninsula in 2019 for the 72-hour Guignol Horror Film Fest in Portland. I think it became relevant again in the wake of Luigi Mangione. It’s a fun flick. Lots of local locations used.

Kenny is a local writer and Youtube personality. He is currently engaged to Meghan Gambill, a veteran of the Sou who is out of his league. He likes golf, fishing, camping, taking his dog to the beach and going to the movies.

Film 2: “Paper Plain” by Rana San and William Myers
Rana San is a filmmaker, choreographer, writer, and curator. Her practice centers experimental and analog approaches to storytelling on stage and screen. She recently had a video essay published in TriQuarterly and her cinepoems have screened nationally and internationally.

“A group of nine writers from Seattle arrived for several days of focused writing, group writing sprints, and evening creativity games. I spent time in my bus on my own, recharging and listening to the provided albums. I also went on daily (and rainy!) walks through the woods to the beach. I found that I had plenty of time to be introspective and also plenty of time for community with others. One take-away: bookending a long walk with writing sessions is my new favorite thing. I would write, discover issues or problems to solve, go for a long walk in nature and mull over the issues, then return to my writing with new approaches.” - Artist-in-residence, Amy Lou Abernethy
