“I am a longtime Sou'wester lover, especially for solo escapes for artmaking, and I was very excited to have an official residency. This was my longest stay, and with the nice weather and much-needed March sun, it was very hard to stay inside and sit and carve! Also, strangely, this was the first of my visits that I found myself very much missing my home in outer Hebo, near the Tillamook coast. So I spent much of my residency working on a carving of a view of Haystack Rock and Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, one of three drawings I made at Sou'wester last fall. Being on the coast, in the mist with the changing sun and weather, it felt appropriate to spend the time with all the nooks and crannies of a beach I love. I've also been contemplating what it means to be a mother in this world right now, since I am not one. And my residency happened to take place during spring break, so there were many young kiddos staying in neighboring trailers around me. I worked on a linocut of a friend and her baby, who recently turned one. I think there's something extremely vital right now about looking ahead, about nurturing the future toward gentleness and tenderness, and understanding.
