It’s certainly not every day you get to create a master copy while the original masterpiece is in your studio.

As one of their first studies after arriving at the Seattle Prize, and took on the challenge of painting their own copies of Charles Stewart Loch by John Singer Sargent, originally painted in the early 1900s.

Creating master copies allows artists to study the brushwork, color, and techniques of the painters who continue to inspire generations of artists today.

Nick’s painting is still a work in progress, but both master copies can be viewed on the second floor at Occidental Fine Arts.

A weekend with is not an opportunity that comes around often.

We’re thankful to everyone who not only joined us for this remarkable workshop, but to those who applied, and to Steven for generously sharing his expertise, insight, and passion for painting. Experiences like these remind us how valuable it is to learn directly from artists who have dedicated their lives to their craft.

To every artist who applied to the 2026 cohort of Seattle Prize — thank you.

Over 600 painters from around the world shared their work, ideas, and ambitions with us. We don’t take that lightly. It’s an incredible thing to witness so many artists committed to slowing down, looking closely, and dedicating themselves to the practice of painting.

Applications are now closed and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who took the time to apply. We look forward to carefully reviewing each submission over the coming weeks.
