For many of us in Western Washington the images still surface clearly when we remember what happened in Oso, Washington, in March 2014. A landslide flattened a square mile of the small town, covering everything in its path in deep mud and killing 43 people. People were homeless, without even a toothbrush to their name. The question hung over our heads: What can we do? Nazarene churches in the Washington Pacific (WaPac) District had recently prepared Crisis Care Kits to be gathered at District Assembly, which was still a couple weeks away. But how could we bring these resources together and provide them to this community in need? We only learned much later that a Nazarene chaplain was onsite and we could have partnered in disaster response. There are other situations that God places upon our hearts. A tornado causes destruction near Longview. Runaway teenagers are forced into s*x trafficking. A mother learns that her young son has seizures and is autistic, and is at a loss as to where to turn. A family of immigrants is barely getting by after escaping religious persecution in Iran. People in each of these situations need help – but what can we do? When we ask the question, God will provide an answer. And he sure made this answer clear. With God's guidance, we have formed the Nazarene Compassionate Alliance Northwest, a new organization in the WaPac District to improve and enlarge the Christian response to human need, particularly in the areas of special needs, new immigrants, emergency response and human trafficking.
