The Office of Community Outreach & Engagement for the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Cancer Consortium facilitates and enhances collaborations to address health disparities. In Washington State and across the Nation, the unequal and unjust burden of cancer is evidenced by the fact that many individuals within diverse communities (African Americans, American Indians, Alaska

Natives, Asians, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, immigrants such as Pakistanis/Indians and Russians, people of low socioeconomic status, rural populations, and LGBTQ+ people) are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage disease and/or die from preventable cancers that may have been detected with early screening. Reducing this burden requires a deliberate, comprehensive, and participatory approach to understanding and addressing cancer health disparities across the cancer control continuum from prevention to end-of-life care. Recognizing the urgency and persistence of this issue, the Office of Community Outreach & Engagement works to meet this challenge of addressing health disparities that exist in Washington State.

Happy Pride from the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement!

This Pride Month we want to highlight the strength and diversity of our 2 Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities while also recognizing the need for equitable cancer care for all. Cancer affects people of every identity, but LGBTQ+ individuals often face unique barriers to prevention, screening, diagnosis, and care. Raising awareness, promoting early detection, and ensuring access to inclusive healthcare can help save lives.

For more information and support resources check out the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Fact Sheet for LGBTQIA+ People:https://www.cancer.org/content/dam/cancer-org/cancer-control/en/booklets-flyers/cancer-fact-sheet-for-lgbtq-people.pdf

🔍 Did you know? Bladder cancer, while often overlooked, is highly treatable when detected early.

Bladder cancer affects more than 610,000 people worldwide each year, and over 1.9 million people are currently living with the disease. Yet awareness remains low, and symptoms are too often ignored or misinterpreted.

Understanding the risks, such as smoking, and recognizing symptoms like blood in the urine, can lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes.
