Chess Mates hosted our annual Winter Chess Fest February 1st, at Cascadia Elementary School. Benjamin Radin, Chess Mates President, was the Chief Tournament Director. Many thanks to Breck Haining and Ariana Bates for helping to run the games!
Seventy-seven players joined the event, mostly from Seattle schools. There were three sections:
K-1
2-4
and 5-8.
Students competed in both as individuals and school teams. The top four players across sections counted for a team trophy, to give all teams a competitive chance (due to some schools sending more players than others).
First place was taken by the host team, Cascadia Elementary, with 17.5 points team score!
Second place went to Evergreen School, with 12.5 and third placed Thurgood Marshall Elementary.
K-1 Section had three-way tie for first place. By tie breaks (all scored 4 points) they finished as follows:
1st - Lluc Adoc
2nd - Dylan Glaser
3rd - Dangdang Liang
All played very well!
The largest section is traditionally Grades 2-4. Cascadian Vivien Lin won all fives games! Second place went to Rafael Frenk, 4.5, and six (!) players tied for 3rd place, all 4 points: Owen Leneway, George Yeh, Amy Zhang, Ayaansh Agrawal, Sophia Ting and Joyce Gui.
Grades 5-8 had 12 players and Kate Wong won all five games! Second place goes to Bryant Bui and three players tied for third: Neel Jayadevan, Akshay Sharma and Vihaan Sreeram.
All players with the score of 3 or more points in sections 2-4 and 5-8 qualified for the State Championships (to be held in Tacoma April 26).
Thank you to all the players and parents for the great tournament!
