In a school where Blacks make up approximately five percent of the student body, Bruce discovered two factors that hindered the work of enticing young Black scholars to attend Seattle University -- one was affordability and other was the lack of faces that look like theirs.

Today, the Seattle University Black Student Union (BSU) Scholarship Endowment has received over 160 gifts and unlocked an additional $5,000 pledged by generous donors! Thank you to everyone who has supported the BSU Scholarship so far.

The BSU Scholarship Endowment is the first student-led, Black-serving scholarship at Seattle University, intended to empower Black and African-American students to seize the learning experience while facing fewer financial concerns.

More gifts are still needed to help BSU reach their goal of $200,000 by March 1st, which will help more than 20 students receive scholarships in the spring quarter - https://bit.ly/2NDJJUk

Every alumni gift will also support Our Moment for Mission, the university's race to connect 10,000 alumni back to the university.

Afternoon,

Welcome to the Annual BSU Showcase! Please take the time to read through this ENTIRE email and let me know if you have any questions.

We have secured a date for the event: February 19th, 2021 from 6 pm-9 pm. The zoom link is here: https://seattleu.zoom.us/j/92117383247. There is a suggested donation of $10 to our BSU Scholarship fund for entrance into this event. We want everyone to be welcome and not turn any away, but still STRONGLY suggest donating to get us to our $200,000 goal. Invite your family, friends, connections to attend!

We will be paying all musical/poetry performers a minimum of $150 each. The idea is for you to perform a setlist of your choice. Be aware there is ZERO TOLERANCE for hate speech, sexism, racism, misogyny, etc. We will need a link to listen to your songs prior to performing them. For your performance, make sure your internet connection is stable and you will provide the backing tracks, etc. on your end. So, test the volume in your own zoom call and decide what's a good way to hear yourself and the backing accompaniment.

Visual Artists just selling their art will be the minimum paid $50 for just being there to talk about your art! You can share your best pieces, prints you have for sale, even make a PowerPoint presentation and I can play it during your segment. Be aware there is ZERO TOLERANCE for hate speech, sexism, racism, misogyny, etc.

Each one of you will be given a time slot (assigned after we confirmed you all as in attendance). Each appearance will have 10-11 minutes, so plan your appearance accordingly. Some of you will be performing poetry/music. Some of you will be selling art. No matter what you're doing in your time.

If you have links to your websites, music, etc. I'll send a form where you can put your information and promote your merch such as t-shirts, CDs, singles, social media, live shows, etc.

Hi alumni,

Our student leaders with Seattle U's National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) are looking for alumni to be on a panel for their upcoming workshop/networking night on October 27. Are there any mechanical, software, and/or electrical engineers that would be interested in being on the panel?

Here are the workshop details -
Tuesday, October 27 at 6:00-7:30 pm via Zoom
Topic: Navigating Professionalism
Their current agenda starts with a 30-minute panel. Then each alumni panelist will be placed in a breakout room with a small group of students for continued conversations and networking. Students will rotate through the breakout rooms.

BSU President Shares Her SU Experience

In the wake of Black Lives Matter protests and the recent murder of Black people, members of the Black Student Union (BSU) found it vital to meet, heal and collaborate to make changes on our campus.

The SU Alumni Sustainability Coalition is hosting a follow-up community meeting to their first event in July on Black Lives Matter & Environmental Justice.

You are invited to a community conversation with Maria Batayola of El Centro de la Raza on Wednesday, August 19 at 12:00 p.m. PST. Event details and registration link are in the post below.
