Academy of Internal Medicine Veterinary Technicians - AIMVT Our VTS Academy is one of five Academies fully recognized by NAVTA's Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties (CVTS).

We are an officially recognized Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) Academy promoting interest in and advancement of internal medicine veterinary technicians. The primary objectives of the AIMVT are to advance veterinary technicians working within the disciplines included in veterinary internal medicine (small animal, large animal, cardiology, neurology, oncology) and to increase the competence

of those who perform specialty duties as defined by the Bylaws (https://www.aimvt.com/constitution--bylaws.html). Goals of the Academy include:

- Promoting interest, advanced knowledge and practice standards of technicians in veterinary internal medicine

- Establishing prerequisite requirements for education and experience prior to certification in the specialties of internal medicine for veterinary technicians.

What you’ll do:

Quality Patient Care: Go beyond basic vitals; think critically to evaluate subtle patient trends, understand laboratory parameters and proactively care for oncology patients. You will safely calculate, handle and administer chemotherapy protocols utilizing closed system transfer devices and strict personal protective equipment safety guidelines to protect yourself, your team, and your patients.

Anesthesia & Analgesia: Confidently calculate complex medical dosages, manage multi-drug CRIs, and execute precise dilutions. Safely run and monitor anesthesia or sedation for diagnostic workups, biopsies, and imaging procedures, with the clinical confidence to alert doctors and adjust protocols immediately in the event of patient decompensation.

Diagnostics & Imaging: Assist with comprehensive staging workups by prepping and positioning patients for advanced diagnostics within our dedicated suite, including digital X-ray, ultrasound, and on-site CT. Safely obtain diagnostic samples via low-stress blood collection, cystocentesis, and assist clinicians with fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) and biopsies.

Compassionate Service: You will act as a foundational member of our new oncology team and serve as a dedicated advocate and primary point of contact for devoted pet parents navigating a cancer diagnosis. You will collaborate across departments and with referring veterinary teams. Along with delivering deeply empathetic, clear communication to pet owners regarding treatment schedules, side-effect management, and quality-of-life assessments offering steady guidance, education, and comfort through every step of their pet's journey.

What we’re looking for:

Current Registered Veterinary Technician with experience handling and administering chemotherapeutic agents. VTS or interest in pursuing higher certifications is a plus.

Strong to advanced knowledge and experience around patient nursing care, medical math and pharmacology.

Position Overview
As a Veterinary Cardiology Technician, you will play an essential role in supporting advanced cardiac diagnostics, anesthesia monitoring, interventional procedures, and long-term patient management.

Key Responsibilities
Advanced Cardiology Nursing & Patient Care

Assist with specialty cardiology appointments and patient assessments
Provide advanced nursing care for hospitalized cardiac patients
Support long-term management of chronic cardiac disease
Monitor patients with CHF, arrhythmias, and other cardiac abnormalities
Educate and communicate with pet owners regarding treatment plans and follow-up care

Cardiac Diagnostics & Procedural Support

Support Holter monitor placement and client education
Prepare patients for cardiac diagnostics and procedures

Advanced Anesthesia & Monitoring

Monitor high-risk cardiac anesthesia cases using:
ECG interpretation
Capnography
Pulse oximetry

Advanced anesthetic monitoring equipment
Recognize and respond to anesthetic or cardiovascular instability

Emergency & Critical Care Collaboration

Partner closely with ER and ICU teams to stabilize cardiac emergencies
Assist with management of respiratory distress, CHF crises, and arrhythmias
Participate in CPR and code response efforts
Support continuity of care across specialty departments

Clinical Excellence & Team Collaboration

Maintain accurate and detailed medical records
Ensure proper maintenance of cardiology and monitoring equipment
Support efficient workflow within a specialty referral environment

Qualifications
Required Experience

Minimum 2 years of experience in:
Specialty veterinary medicine
Emergency & Critical Care
ICU
High-acuity general practice
Strong anesthesia monitoring and technical nursing skills

Preferred Qualifications

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Must develop a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the Oncology service as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively.
Perform technical nursing skills such as: IV catheter placement, blood collection, urine collection (cystocentesis, catheterization), taking radiographs, etc.
Perform sedation for procedures such as CT, oral exams, ultrasounds, and radiographs. *Sedation training will be provided if not already trained.
Calculates, dispenses and administers medications at the direction of the Oncologist on the case.
Ensures that procedures, medications etc. are accurately documented on Smartflow sheets in advance of daily invoicing.
Communicates efficiently and effectively with clients, referring veterinarians, CWVS doctors and staff, and ensures that all communications are accurately logged in Ezyvet.
Ensures detailed patient histories are obtained from clients and communicates this to the Oncologist.
Responsible for accurately documenting all patient information while on shift and for ensuring that this information is transmitted in a timely and efficient manner to staff in Wards, ICU, and to other Oncology staff who may be involved in individual cases.
Ensures supply inventory is sufficient to meet the needs of the Oncology service.
Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained, and that maintenance is documented.
Ensures Standard Operating Procedures are current and comprehensive.
Keeps the Oncology workstation and procedures areas clean and organized.
Ensures that Oncology Assistant is accomplishing their duties and that the Technician Supervisor or Human Resources is aware of any performance issues.
Facilitate a positive work environment.
Actively participates in all offered in house CE
Performs other duties as required.
As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you or if the doctor on the service is away. This could involve working any shift within the 24-hour operating day of the hospital including weekends and holidays.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN 1, 2, OR 3-NEUROLOGY

The neurology service sees primary and referral patients with neurologic symptoms or diseases. In addition to neurological processes involving the brain or spinal cord, neurological process can affect nerves in any part of the body and would fall within the care and assessment of the neurology service. Technicians are involved in support of the efficiency, teaching, patient care, and client experience of this service. Technicians will provide support for a variety of general and specialized procedures, utilizing skills for patient care as well as instruction. The neurology service is an important part of the clinical training of clinical veterinary students as well as specialty training of
DVMs seeking specialty training to become boarded as veterinary Neurologists. Technicians provide instruction to veterinary students in technical procedures, hospital policy, and organize and manage daily clinical tasks to enhance service efficiency and effectiveness. In collaboration with faculty, house officers, and veterinary students, technicians are to support the service and teaching missions of the teaching hospital.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN 1

20% - Assist with restraint and positioning for a variety of techniques. Basic restraint for exams and procedures such as venipuncture to advanced positioning and restraint for advanced procedures such as cisternal CSF taps. Assist with lifting all sizes and weights of patients, assist in ambulation both indoors and outdoors. Assist with providing recumbency care to avoid common issues such as decubital sores and treating patients with these issues if they arise, by frequently changing their position, and applying appropriate methods for padding and avoiding pressure, bandages and wound care.

20% - Assist with palpating urinary bladders, estimating quantity, and thoroughly expressing bladders on male and female cats and dogs. Placement and troubleshooting of urinary catheters both indwelling and temporary. Assist with diagnostic sample collection (urine, blood etc.) and appropriate preparation, protocol, handling and submission of samples for example blood cultures. Assist with placement of IV catheters and troubleshooting issues.

20% - Assist with all aspects of minor procedures (set-up, instrumentation and size selection, follow-up care, clean up) such as muscle biopsy and electrodiagnostics as well as assisting in surgery, for example a craniotomy or sinusotomy. Comfortable with sterile technique. Learning and adhering to sample care and appropriate submission both in-house and to outside labs, local and national.

20% - Assist with client communication and scheduling patient appointments and procedures. Communicate and maintain a record of such with rDVMs, clients, and other outside providers (diagnostic centers, or special-order entities for devices are supplements). Assist with maintaining complete records, estimates, and entering charges.

15% - Assist with performing student service orientation with every block change. Other related duties as they pertain to the operation of the small animal hospital and specifically the support of the neurology service. Participate in the small animal blood bank and take on call for blood bank. Participate and meet the requirements and obligations of holiday assignments in support of SA ICU and ER as scheduled. Respond as called upon as an emergency response personnel in the event of activation in response to any number and variety of emergent situations, to include outside normal duty hours and shift length.

5% - Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology; OR CVT or equivalent; OR 3
years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree OR CVT or equivalent; 2 years in a veterinary practice and/or hospital setting.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN 2

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree OR CVT or equivalent; 4 years in a veterinary practice and/or hospital setting.

JOB COMPETENCIES ( ALL LEVELS ):

Knowledge of basic animal care and handling including restraint
Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, and abbreviations
Basic computer skills, problem-solving and communication skills
Knowledge of proper medical record keeping (paper and electronic)
Math skills; including drug calculations (dosage & conversions)
Operation of equipment, diagnostic tests and hand held analyzers (eg. Glucometer)
Anesthetic monitoring and recovery
Ability to collect blood from a number of different sites by venipuncture
Proper administration of oral, sub-cutaneous, intra muscular, and intra venous medications

Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):

Able to answer phone calls after hours from students for issues regarding department. Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
