Access to world-class medical education is critical to improving cancer outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. As part of the BVGH-MedServe AAI Prostate Cancer Bootcamp and Clinic, BVGH organized two guest lectures by Dr. Alison Tree, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden, London, at the University of Lagos for medical students and faculty.

Dr. Tree's lectures explored the evolution of radiotherapy and prostate cancer treatment, and the importance of clinical research in informing clinical practice. University of Lagos College of Medicine Provost Prof. Ademola Ayodele Oremosu; Deputy Provost Prof. Femi Odebiyi; and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Deputy CMAC and Urology Head of Department Prof. Rufus Ojewola provided remarks, underscoring the University’s commitment to advancing cancer education and care in Nigeria.
By bringing leading global expertise directly into Nigerian lecture halls, University of Lagos and BVGH are helping to inspire and equip the next generation of oncology professionals.

Special thanks to our partners at MedServe, University of Lagos, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), and Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) for making the Bootcamp and Clinic possible.

The human body is composed of numerous tissues and systems that are each defined by their own unique characteristics and diseases. In the United States, it is common for pathologists to subspecialize – spending their days reviewing slides from a single area of the body. Yet, pathologists within public cancer hospitals in Africa are often expected to review tissues and diagnose diseases across the body.

In response to requests from AAI partner hospitals and in partnership with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), BVGH developed a 12-session digital training course to refresh laboratory staff on the pathology of cancers common to Africa and reinforce the distinct presentations of urologic, central nervous system, head and neck, and other cancers. More than 1,500 healthcare professionals from 101 countries worldwide benefitted from the course.

In Nigeria, approximately 60% of cancer patients require radiotherapy as part of their care – yet access to this critical treatment has been out of reach for most patients. To ensure that hospitals’ staff are supported as they begin to use new radiotherapy machines commissioned by Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH), BVGH and MedServe launched two digital communities of practice – one for radiation oncologists and one for medical physicists. Through these communities, participants review treatment plans, troubleshoot challenges, and share best practices drawn from real-world clinical experience.

These biweekly sessions have grown into a nationwide peer-learning network, now including staff from cancer centers across Nigeria. In addition to developing schedules and coordinating cases, BVGH has recruited international experts from the United States and Estonia to join and bring additional perspectives to the conversations.

Together, the communities represent Nigeria’s dedication to building a culture of clinical collaboration that will strengthen radiotherapy delivery for patients across the country for years to come.

MedServe is committed to upskilling Nigeria’s oncology workforce—including partnering with BVGH through our African Access Initiative (AAI) to strengthen multidisciplinary team (MDT) cancer care. MDTs, which bring experts from different disciplines together to review patient cases and develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans, are considered the gold standard for oncology care.

BVGH integrated modules on MDT setup and management into the ongoing BVGH-MedServe AAI Prostate Cancer Bootcamp and Clinic at MedServe LUTH Cancer Centre (MLCC). Together with Dr. Alison Tree—a renowned radiation oncologist engaged by BVGH—Nigerian clinicians have taken part in cross-institutional MDT meetings; reviewed patient cases; and discussed toxicity management, psychosexual health, and long-term recovery with patients.

Special thanks to our partners at MedServe, the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), MLCC, University of Lagos, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for making the Bootcamp and Clinic possible.
