I lost by beloved Golden Retriever, Bud at only 8 years old to a hideous blood borne cancer when he was only 8 years old. The cancer was so aggressive, he went from feeling fine one day to passing only 3 days later.

I wanted to honor him by rescuing another special Golden in need. I was looking on the website of DFW Metro Golden Retriever Rescue when I saw her. She was one year old. She had a fleece coat on. She had sweet gentle eyes. And... she was completely bald except for the hair on her ears.

She had a rare, one in a million condition called Folicular Dysplasia. I knew I had to have her. She had been at the rescue for 5 months, when the average time to be adopted was 2 weeks. When she was a puppy and her puppy hair fell out, her hair follicles closed up and adult hair never grew in. Her owners did not want her because of the way she looked.

When I adopted Dora Mae, she was already grey in the face. The rescue told us she’d been adopted once before and returned for being too quiet. Still, she leaned into my hand every time I pet her. She was my dog; I had to bring her home.

For the first several months we called her “Dora the Doorstop” because she was afraid of everything and rarely left the couch.

Her owner had abandoned her, moved away, and called his girlfriend telling her to get rid of the dog, he didn’t want her anymore. Rose had been given away five times already and was brought back within a week each time because nobody could handle her.

When I met Rose, she rolled over, clearly asking me to pet her. But when I reached for her, she barked hysterically and rolled back onto her belly. She wagged her tail but watched me all the time. She gave off such mixed signals, I knew she had been abused...

When Dobby was rescued, he was in terrible shape. The poor honey didn’t even look like a dog. He was mostly hairless, and his skin was red and raw.

He was taken to a vaccination clinic funded by Concerned Citizens for Animal Welfare. The staff couldn’t believe their eyes, but they knew that they needed to help him. His condition was heartbreaking.

Dobby was five years old, but had never even seen the inside of a vet’s office. Sara, one of the employees of the clinic, was drawn to the poor creature and knew he desperately needed some care and love. It wasn’t just his skin that was the issue; he was starving.

His skin was exposed and raw because of the flea treatments his former owner had given him. Apparently, she hadn’t wanted to spend the money or time getting him the proper care he needed.

She didn’t seem to care much about the dog, and Dobby’s rescuers begged her to surrender him so that they could care for him.

She agreed right away, and Dobby was whisked away. He was in a lot of pain and needed all the help he could get. His rescuers immediately went to work nursing him back to health.

I've been fostering for our local shelter for several years and have had many dogs. (198 so far) One of my very favorites was Christmas, a chocolate lab/pittie mix. He was dumped at our shelter on Christmas Day 2009, hairless, scabbed, and itching.

Faye is a German Shepherd about 12 years old we believe. She was living in the backyard of her home and was in very poor condition when we discovered her.

She was ate up with fleas, crippled with arthritis and both eyes were terribly infected and she was blind from never having any medical care.

Someone in Detroit noticed that their neighbor had chained their two-year-old dog outside during a blizzard overnight. The poor dog was shivering and holding up her paws because it was so cold.

The neighbor knew they had to get help immediately. If the pup stayed outside for any longer, she would have died...

Scared and waiting on death row in another shelter, Teddy Bear was brought to Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center (SPARC). His owner at the time had surrendered him after adopting him from yet another shelter.

His first owner, the owner of his heart, got Alzheimer’s Disease. The disease progressed and there were days, maybe even weeks, that went by in which he could not rely on food or even being recognized or acknowledged. We believe that his owner may have forgotten she owned a dog and that she may have become frightened of him and screamed and yelled at him. Her behavior was erratic, and he became more and more frightened — so much so his trust in humans started to give out.

Unfortunately, when a dog loses their trust in humans they can act out, and the only way that dogs can communicate with the outside world is with their mouths. After the disease had progressed enough for his first owner to no longer be able care for him, he was admitted to his first shelter.

Teddy Bear is adorable (seriously, have you seen the photos?) so he always got lots of adoption inquiries. He was adopted by a woman who really cared for him and tried hard to get help for him, hiring trainers to no avail. Even she had to surrender him to yet another shelter.

Even though she couldn’t keep him, she didn’t give up on him and continued to search frantically for a place for him to go. When his behavior did not improve in the shelter environment, Teddy Bear was put on the euthanasia list...
