This isn't an April Fool's joke.

We're going to extend our early-bird registration for our regional conference. That means the rates will remain at $35 for professionals, $25 for students and $20 for online attendees at our conference at the University of Washington-Tacoma's Milgard Hall. This extension runs to April 9, when prices will go up by $5 in each category.

We have some great programming set up.

* Learn about how to cover faith, and how that can improve your reporting in other areas.

* Get an update on the state of open government and open records in our region.

* Hear from journalists and judges about what every reporter should know before they have to cover a court hearing.

* Hear how one reporter has shed light on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People crisis.

* Get tips on covering the Trans community in our current political climate.

We will also be honoring our Mark of Excellence award winners over lunch. The first-place winners will go on to the national competition.

Our conference is proudly sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists, the Kiplinger Program, The Seattle Times and the Seattle Gay News.

The conference starts at 9:30 a.m. April 11. To register, go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1983849002771?aff=oddtdtcreator.

I hope to see you there.

SPJ, joined by a coalition of press freedom groups and SPJ chapters across the country, calls on U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel “and the entire federal government to reaffirm its commitment to press freedom and all public officials to remember a fundamental truth: When journalists are silenced, all Americans pay the price.”

It's great to see SPJ standing up for journalists.

SPJ has issued a formal letter to the White House expressing deep concern over the Administration’s new “media offenders” webpage — an official list that publicly targets individual journalists and news outlets for coverage deemed unfavorable.

SPJ urges the Administration to remove the page immediately, restore a more constructive, democratic approach to engaging with the media and welcomes the opportunity to meet with President Donald Trump or members of his Administration to discuss these concerns and reaffirm the essential role of a free press in our democracy.

Here's a great offer from SPJ for $15 off on membership and a chance to show your support for fellow journalists who are under attack.

Dear Colleagues,

When reporters ask hard questions, they deserve respect — not insults.

This week, after President Donald Trump dismissed Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey with “Quiet, piggy,” and publicly scolded ABC’s Mary Bruce for asking about Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, journalists across the country felt that familiar mix of anger, resolve and deep professional pride.

Insults won’t break us.

They galvanize us.

✊So, we’re reclaiming the word meant to demean a journalist and using it to build power, community and collective strength.

🔗For a limited time, take $15 off an SPJ Pro membership with code: PIGGY

Why?

Because when journalists are attacked, the Society of Professional Journalists grows stronger.

Because press freedom requires all of us.

Because the best answer to hostility is solidarity — and more journalists linked arm-in-arm.

✨If you believe in the mission — protecting reporting, defending the First Amendment and upholding the SPJ Code of Ethics — now is the moment to stand with us.

🔗If you're new to SPJ, join, or if you would like to extend your current SPJ Pro membership, renew, today and use code PIGGY for $15 off.

Let’s turn an insult into fuel.

Let’s grow the community Trump tried to silence.

📣Let’s get louder — together.

Yours in solidarity,

The Society of Professional Journalists

For more than 100 years, the Society of Professional Journalists has been dedicated to encouraging a climate in which journalism can be practiced more freely and fully, stimulating high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism and perpetuating a free press. Join us today!

SPJ supports full transparency in the prosecution of the suspect in the killing of commentator Charlie Kirk. Open judicial proceedings are a cornerstone of public trust, and access for journalists ensures accountability, accuracy and confidence in the justice system.

SPJ joins other media organizations in urging the court to permit cameras and full press access during all phases of the court proceedings stemming from Kirk’s fatal shooting Sept. 10. When justice is carried out in the open, the public’s faith in its fairness grows — and that is vital to both democracy and the free press.

SPJ has announced the creation of a new Advocacy Committee, a key initiative under newly elected SPJ National President Chris R. Vaccaro. The committee will advance SPJ’s mission to defend journalists and journalism through strategic action, collaboration and tangible resources for members.

The committee’s creation aligns directly with the Strategic Priorities Process SPJ undertook in 2024, which renewed the organization’s focus on advocacy and press freedom as core pillars of its work.

The new committee will be co-chaired by Frank LoMonte, Legal Counsel for CNN, and Susan King, Senior Fellow at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University Indianapolis.

“It’s important that we work collaboratively, alongside some incredibly thoughtful and servant-minded leaders, to develop a clear path that empowers our members and strengthens the journalism industry’s ability to advocate,” Vaccaro said. “Our goal is to provide tangible resources and advance SPJ’s mission of advocacy in meaningful ways. I look forward to working with the committee to facilitate an actionable path forward.”
