Congratulations to our annual Friends of Magnuson Park scholarship winner, Khalil Tate!

Khalil Tate (middle) accepts our annual $5,000 scholarship award from Friends of Magnuson Park Board President, Ruth Fruland (left) at our awards ceremony last week.

Khalil plans to train to be a firefighter while earning his EMT certificate and completing an Allied Health Associate of Applief Science degree at North Seattle College. 🙌

We wish you the brightest of futures!

Last week we met outside of vacant Building 41, the former Navy Base gas station, with UW Architecture’s Kathryn Merlino and her Preservation and Adaptive Reuse class to share our vision of the future of the building as a Visitor Center.

The class will be working on adaptive reuse design plans and renderings for both the gas station and the fire station (Bldg 18) and are calling their course “Fire and Fuel”.

We are so excited for this partnership and how it will move our Visitor Center dreams forward. 🔥 ⛽️

We were saddened to hear of the passing of our great ally and friend, Frank Chopp. Most recently, he was our earliest supporter to receive state funding to commemorate the First World Flight Centennial.

He was also a tireless advocate of low-income housing, including at Magnuson Park, and was one of the major forces behind the beautifully renovated Mercy Magnuson building in the Historic District, formally home to Navy enlisted men and now home to 128 units of workforce housing and a daycare.

Frank, thank you for all you did. You will be missed.

These articles from Solid Ground and UW Magazine are lovely remembrances of Frank and his work.

Friends kicked off the new year with a small ceremony awarding our 2024 annual scholarship winner Abel Antinafu with $5,000 to support him in his studies at Whitman College.

"I plan to use the scholarship to advance my education and training in the medical field, with a focus on cancer research. This support is especially meaningful to me because cancer has affected someone close to me who has been battling the disease for a while. Witnessing their struggle has fueled my determination to find a cure and make a difference in the fight against cancer." - Abel Antinafu
