West Seattle Bee Garden

West Seattle Bee Garden Pollination garden and beehive enclosure cared for by volunteers. Free and open to the public. Field trips available upon request.

Helping the public connect with nature, and learn about the interdependent relationship between pollinators and our ecosystem was the driving force behind the WSBG's creation.

Today we are doing our first honey extraction! This is a new machine to us, so we brought it home to see what it looks like, and so far, so good!
We have some Very productive bees this year, so next round, we will have some crowd participation!

The hive has been split! Our hive was so healthy, it was ready to swarm, so we helped them out by splitting them and putting the new queens in and giving the existing queen her space. They are spicy friends, but calmed down Immediately when we gave them their second home.
They also Completely filled the top box with honey, so we put in a vortex excluder so they will come out of the top box and can't get back in, and we will have completely harvestable honey in a week!!!

Hey y'all, if you were wanting to join for our weekly hive check, we are gonna take a break today. It is Super stressful for them to have us check them when the weather is off, so we are going to let them bee and check in again next week.
If you want to join for hive checks, we are doing (most) Saturdays at 9:30. We have limited spare suits, but even just watching can be really neat.
Thank you all for helping us keep our bee friends safe!

Hey! We did our morning check today, and the bees are doing So well! It was a bit cloudy and chilly for a full check, so we just did some maintenance in the apiary, put on a new super to work on, and sat with them for a little bit.
If you ever want to see the checks, 9:30am every Saturday!
If you are interested in a workshop about native bees like our friend in the last video, join us on August 1st at 11am.
We are dedicated to having a safe and supportive space for Everyone, so let us know if you are looking for anything more from the garden and our efforts!
Also, join us tomorrow and every first Sunday for Farm Day to help clean up the garden and improve the space!

We did our first of our new weekly 9:30am Summer checks this morning! Bees are super aware of time, and we are wanting them to get used to us visiting at least weekly.
We are hoping that their progress may get them toward ready to split next week so we can have 2 hives again, and it is looking promising!
Swipe to see some of our other pollinator friends and join us for a course soon at the hives about how you can support native bees wherever you are. And feel free to come by Saturday mornings to watch the hive checks. We have a limited number of suits, but if you are interested in getting in close, wear light colored canvas long pants, closed toed shoes, and a sense of wonder.
Swipe to the end for video of a bumble lapping up nectar.

We checked our hive today, they are doing amazing! So well, in fact, that we were able to add another level to them so they can start building upwards.
We are watching for a new hive to build back up to 2, but for now, we have a beautiful only-hive, with some wonderfully busy friends.
Stop by to cheer them on as they are building up their stores, and making extra that we are excited to share!

We got to check on the bees today, despite the roller coaster weather.
We have lost one of our 2 hives, but we hopefully have a loop for a new one. 🤞
We got to meet another drone at the Farm Day, Harvey, one of our keepers, got to talk some bee facts, and our queen has a new dark blue hat.
Taking ideas for her name, she is reading over a thriving hive despite the weather and the loss of her sister hive.
Let me know in comments what you think we should name her! I always think hives do better with a named queen.
The final picture is the tribute square for our lost queen, as is my tradition.
