Audubon Washington is expanding the Audubon Conservation Ranching program to the Columbia Plateau, bringing regenerative grazing practices and bird-friendly land certification to this ecologically significant region.

By supporting sustainable land management while enhancing critical shrub-steppe habitat for birds and other wildlife, we can effectively balance habitat conservation and agricultural productivity.

How do scientists track migratory birds across vast distances? One important tool is the Motus wildlife tracking system. Audubon chapters in Washington, including South Sound Bird Alliance and Kitsap Audubon Society, are helping expand this network, providing valuable data on migration routes and critical stopover habitats along the Pacific Flyway.

Don't ignore female birds! That's what a team of our scientists are advocating for to prevent potentially dangerous gaps in scientific understanding.

Known as the Galbatross Project, their study, published in IBIS journal last year, shows that identification and observation of female birds can help scientists conserve birds and their habitats more broadly.

That's why it's so important to improve female bird identification. And what better time to learn more than on Female Bird Day this weekend, also started by the Galbatross Project.

Check the link in comments to learn how you can submit your female bird sightings and contribute to the movement.

Chirp Chirp! Swainson’s Thrush here, Audubon Washington’s Bird of the Year! I’m joined by millions of my feathered friends who have traveled thousands of miles to spend the summer in Washington state and points north.

I understand that it might be challenging to know who all of us are, which is why Audubon created the Bird Migration Explorer, an interactive tool that shares migration data for over 450 bird species across the Western Hemisphere and the challenges we face along our long journeys. I hope you’ll check it out to learn more about my friends and me!

Oh, and have you heard or seen me in your neighborhood yet? You can win a fun prize if you have – just let me know where and when in the comments!

The Bird Migration Explorer is your guide to the heroic annual journeys made by over 450 bird species, and the challenges they face along the way.

Have you ever seen a Double-crested Cormorant? It's likely, since they're the most common cormorant species in America—not to mention prolific fish-eaters. They propel themselves through water with their legs and effortlessly snare fish with their hooked beak.

Seward Park Audubon Center's very own Joey Manson was featured along with Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove in this KING 5 news story about the importance of urban forests.

Healthy urban forests provide habitat, food sources, and vital stopover spaces for migratory species navigating increasingly challenging conditions.

Protecting and expanding our urban tree canopy is climate action, public health work, and bird conservation all at once!

Washington State Department of Natural Resources Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove

As hotter summers loom, officials warn urban forests are no longer just about beauty. They’re becoming critical cooling spaces for neighborhoods across Washington.

Oh no! You’ve found a baby bird on the ground, apparently alone and in distress. 🐥

Its tiny chirps may pull at your heartstrings, and it can be tempting to spring into action—but, not all baby birds need rescuing. That's why it's so important to stop and assess the situation.

If they do need your help, how to help them depends on a few factors: does this bird need immediate medical attention? And is it a nestling or a fledgling?

Take a look at this graphic to determine how and when to assist baby birds.
