Margin Shift: Friends in Poetry

Margin Shift: Friends in Poetry Margin Shift: Friends in Poetry is a Seattle based poetry collective that's constantly shifting.

We highlight poets of color, LGBTQI poets, poets from out of town, poets who are new to town, women poets, undocumented poets, experimental writers (whatever that might mean!), and brand new writers. Always changing, always shifting, always trying something different. Some of Our Margin Shift Readers and Hosts:

Get a break from the dreary dampness of early Juneuary in Seattle with some verdant and insightful verse! MarginShift is excited to welcome the talented, Palouse-based poet, Linda Russo, to our cozy Hugo House lounge to share eco-poetic experiments in re-inhabitation.

Joining Linda will be an incredible lineup of local voices, including Sarah Mangold, whose highly potent collages-in-verse of women visionaries like Hilma af Klint are sonically and visually invigorating, Joel Felix, whose haunting collages explore the ecologies and the personal and collective mythology mutations of Late Capital, Samar Abulhassan, whose polyvocal prose-poetic meditations are both visceral and deeply insightful, and the dynamic Ally Ang, whose lush lyric invocations call forth a vibrant, invigorating world.

Get ready for an evening filled with thought-provoking poetry that will awaken the world around you!

Let us know you’ll be there. RSVP at https://www.marginshift.org/events/microscope

Thanks to everyone who came out to Hugo House last night! It was a moving night of poems and ritually aligning our selves and our creative gifts in solidarity with all the amazing vibrancy of the material and spiritual world as we make our perennial descent into the underworld of winter.

In the hidden light of the Scorpio New Moon this morning, just before dawn, I gathered all of the intrusions we symbolically let go of last night and released them in the purifying force of fire to the spirits and the beings that derive their vitality from the Green River. May this act serve as a reminder in the strife-ridden days and months ahead that we are not alone and our connection with the life force that holds the world together makes us stronger than any pesky intruding spirit of nihilism or perfectionism or self-righteousness or greed or supremacy or oppression.

The Cascadia Poetry Festival will be in town Nov 1-3 (buy tickets and get details at the Cascadia Poetics Lab website), and we’ve managed to snag a few of the performers to join us on October 31 at Hugo House for a night of poetry and rituals to ward off the many INTRUSIONS that keep us from being present and in our bodies. We’re thrilled to have CA Conrad, poetry’s nomadic High Priestx, on hand to lead us in ritual and read some of their poetic divinations. They’ll be joined in the somatic and poetic arts by Meredith Quartermain and Jami Macarty, who’ll be in town from BC, and local poet, activist, and Redmond Poet Laureate, Ching-in Chen. It’s going to be a great night you won’t want to miss!
