Celebrating Women’s History Month Through Reproductive Justice & Black Feminist Thought

At Surge Reproductive Justice, we’ve worked hard to create spaces that empower Black women, women of color, and q***r and trans people of color—because reproductive justice is about more than just rights; it’s about liberation.

We envision a world free from reproductive oppression, racism, and violence, and our work is rooted in community-led advocacy and action. Through our campaigns, we’re building power and transforming systems:

✊🏾 Doulas 4 All – Our coalition wrote, lobbied, and passed ESHB 1881, establishing birth doulas as a profession in Washington state, securing Medicaid reimbursements to ensure accessible perinatal support.

🗣️ Our Words Build Power – A community-centered research and organizing process that uplifts QTBIPOC narratives of resistance to shape future reproductive justice campaigns and policy advocacy.

🤰🏾 Black Perinatal Health Campaign – A powerful partnership between Black birth workers, Black families, and Surge RJ to develop holistic solutions that support birthing people, their families, and Black birth workers.

🎤 Just Speak – Our storytelling and political education series, covering s*x positivity, abortion, and parenting through a social justice lens.

This Women’s History Month, join us in honoring the legacy of Black Feminist Strategies and reproductive justice. Help us continue this vital work by sharing or donating at surgereprojustice.org.

REMINDER 🤩✨ THIS WEDNESDAY, Reproductive Justice 101 is our introduction to the reproductive justice framework and our work at Surge Reproductive Justice - in this training we cover: What is reproductive justice? How are we conditioned to think of reproductive rights/ & justice? How does reproductive justice connect to gender and race? This online training is highly interactive, and approximately 3 hours long. We welcome people from all backgrounds to attend!

We believe in the power of political education and collective analysis building, so we offer our leadership development trainings every trimester. It’s that time! These trainings are opportunities to deepen your understanding and commitment to anti-racism, reproductive justice, and legislative advocacy through a Black feminist lens. They are also a great way to build community with like-spirited people from around the country in an accessible and fun way.

Marsha P. Johnson – Black Q***r & Trans Liberation

“No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.” – Marsha P. Johnson

Marsha P. Johnson, a Black trans activist and organizer, was a key figure in the Stonewall Rebellion and co-founded groups like STAR (Street Trans Action Revolutionaries) to support homeless trans youth. She fought tirelessly for the rights of Black q***r and trans communities, advocating for safety, healthcare, and dignity for all.

Her legacy represents leading with care and fostering community-based dialogue, showing us that reproductive justice must include the liberation of q***r and trans people. At Surge Reproductive Justice, we honor her work by fighting for reproductive policies that affirm and protect Black LGBTQ+ communities.

This first part series about learning History celebrates Black feminist leaders who continue to inspire our organizing. Their work reminds us that reproductive justice is inseparable from racial, economic, and gender justice.

Let’s continue learning, building, and taking action together! Which of these leaders inspires you the most? Drop a comment below! ⬇️

Kimberlé Crenshaw – Intersectionality & Reproductive Justice

“If you’re standing in the path of multiple forms of exclusion, you’re likely to get hit by both.” – Kimberlé Crenshaw

Kimberlé Crenshaw is a legal scholar and civil rights advocate who coined the term intersectionality—a framework that helps us understand how overlapping systems of oppression (like racism, s*xism, classism, and homophobia) affect marginalized communities, especially Black women.

Her work is foundational to Reproductive Justice, highlighting how reproductive oppression is not just about gender, but also about race, class, and other intersecting identities. At Surge Reproductive Justice, we use intersectionality to ensure that all voices—especially those at the margins—are centered in our organizing.

By applying Crenshaw’s insights, we fight for policies that recognize the complexity of people’s lived experiences and build solutions that address the full scope of oppression.

Our Story

Surge stands with communities whose bodies, lives, and families have been subject to state and social control. We advance racial and reproductive justice through community engagement, education, and policy advocacy by mobilizing communities.

Surge works to end reproductive oppression and to ensure access to reproductive health services and economic security for all people. We focus on:

  • Access to reproductive healthcare for all immigrants.

  • Birthing and reproductive justice for imprisoned women.
