“A 2023 modeling study found that almost 40% of the 6,700 deaths attributable to urban heat in Europe in 2015 could have been prevented if cities increased tree cover to 30% of their land area.” Seattle’s tree canopy goal is 30% but as drafted, the Comprehensive Plan does not require any trees on residential lots in Regional, Urban, or Neighborhood Centers, which puts Seattle’s 30% canopy goal out of reach.

Trees can make it feel up to 14 degrees cooler. Yet analysis shows many cities are leaving large areas of plantable land underutilized.

“In many neighborhood centers, new zoning would allow up to 100% of a lot to be covered by buildings and pavement…Without changes, entire neighborhoods could become urban heat islands, according to Tree Action Seattle. That would lead to hotter streets, less shade, and worse air quality. Lower canopy, already overburdened communities would be especially hard hit.”

Seattle is on the verge of reshaping its neighborhoods for the next 20 years, but advocates for a healthier tree canopy warn of potential long-term problems.
