At the beginning of the pandemic, the Seattle Fire Department knew that as first responders, they we're probably going to have to pivot their efforts. What do you enjoy about working in the fire service?
“I love that this job is all about teamwork. There’s always someone who has your back. I’ve had great support and mentors here starting from day one. Mike Williams, who is the driver on the truck, has been an amazing mentor to me. He’s always teaching and showing me things to work on, and he’s an inspiring person to learn from and watch. ” - Firefighter, Cyrus Brown.

The general public has a sense of what it’s like to be a firefighter. But what does your typical day look like?
“It may surprise people that around 85% of our runs are medical-related. A lot of responses we go on are for people who are sick. It can be anything from someone breaking their ankle to their grandmother having a heart attack or a car accident. Very few of our calls are actually fire related. But that’s part of what I enjoy about this job. Every day is different and it’s an exciting opportunity to help others.” – Firefighter, Trayvaugn Cobbs.

What surprised you most about joining the fire service?
“Something I didn’t expect was how different the culture of the fire service is. That was something that was harder to understand for me than the physical components of the job. There is a tremendous amount of history in the fire service and the firefighters here are very serious about their jobs. I learned a lot in the first couple of years about taking ownership of being a firefighter and taking this job as serious as the public expects us to.” – Firefighter, Allison King.

These are the brave firefighters of Seattle all of whom are EMT’s and first responders, and many are also certified paramedics. Highly trained and professional, they respond immediately when we need them, 24 hours a day in every city neighborhood.
But sometimes even heroes need heroes.
That’s why we created the non-profit Seattle Fire Foundation. As a private organization, we have the flexibility to raise and allocate resources more nimbly than the city budget process, enabling us to identify and quickly fulfill the Seattle Fire Department’s pressing needs.
