Many thanks to The Seattle Medium for covering the social housing movement in the city !

“Housing is far too expensive in this city. We need more housing of all types and all sizes, and social housing is part of the solution,” said Mayor Katie Wilson. “With a robust revenue source, new leadership, and a mayor’s office committed to its success, the Seattle Social Housing Developer is now set up to fulfill its promise and deliver the mixed-income, permanently affordable, publicly owned housing that Seattle voted for.”

Seattle City Council endorses $115 million funding for Seattle Social Housing Developer, facilitating the creation of affordable housing for the city's working residents.

It’s true. Right now, it looks like we’re getting more money than expected — an ESTIMATED $115 million — and we intend to use those funds carefully. As interim CEO Tiffani McCoy said last night at a state of social housing event at El Centro De La Raza, this revenue means “hundreds of people this year will benefit from housing that remains permanently affordable, housing that is publicly owned and passed down through generations, housing that works for people who are a variety of income levels and helps prevent them from falling into homelessness.” Thanks to for this report. The Seattle Social Housing Developer would like to thank & for co-sponsoring legislation that begins the transfer of excess compensation revenue to SSHD. Approved by the vast majority of voters last year, Proposition 1A funds social housing by charging employers, not employees, a 5 percent tax on annual compensation above $1 million. Please help us welcome Koll Husemoen to the SSH team. Husemoen is SSH’s new interim Chief Financial Officer. Husemoen is an accomplished finance executive with more than 30 years of hands-on experience in real estate development, construction, and related financial leadership. Throughout his career, he has excelled in overseeing multi-million-dollar project portfolios, budgeting and cost controls for large-scale developments. Husemoen has also cultivated and maintained strong relationships with banking and bonding institutions. SSH interim CEO Tiffani McCoy says she decided to bring Husemoen on immediately because building public trust with how SSH spends public dollars and implements financial controls matters.

The Seattle Social Housing Developer is proud to welcome well-known housing policy and development expert Ginger Segel to our organization. With close to 40 years of experience, Segel will serve as Chief Real Estate Development Officer effective immediately. McCoy decided to bring Segel on board as quickly as possible to complement her leadership and provide the housing development expertise she doesn’t possess herself but is critically needed at SSHD. Segel began her career as an tenant organizer in the late 1980’s when thousands of small single room occupancy apartments were bulldozed to make way for office towers and luxury residential development in Seattle. She has served as the Housing Director and the Director of Advocacy and Resident Services for the Low Income Housing Institute, the Executive Director of the Washington Low Income Housing Network, the precursor to the Housing Alliance, and the Chief Development Services Officer for Community Frameworks, a nonprofit that develops affordable housing, and provides homeownership opportunities to working families. “I am so happy to be part of the team. The housing crisis is structural. The cost to build new housing is too high for people to afford the rent or the purchase prices of apartments or homes. Fortunately, Seattle citizens support a new approach: social housing, which will create housing for low and middle income residents who otherwise would be forced into substandard housing or long commutes to live in cheaper suburbs,” Segel says.

SSHD is thrilled to welcome Michael Eliason as Director of Design and Policy. Michael is a researcher, writer, and architect based in Seattle. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech, and has been an advocate and consultant for Passivhaus buildings — highly energy-efficient construction and retrofits — for 15 years. Michael recently published “Building for People: Designing Livable, Climate-Friendly, Affordable Neighborhoods” (Island Press, 2024). Michael has organized for social housing in Seattle for over a decade, was an advisor on Initiative 135, and was a founding board member of Seattle Social Housing as the Green New Deal Oversight Board appointee. At SSHD, Michael will help oversee building standards, and establish a policy framework to help deliver better, more sustainable, and more livable buildings with the more diverse unit mix that is envisioned by SSHD’s charter. Michael is currently a renter in Fremont, where he lives with his family.

The Seattle Social Housing Developer (SSHD) Board is thrilled to announce the appointment of Tiffani McCoy as Interim CEO, effective immediately. As one of the chief architects of the social housing movement in Seattle, Tiffani is uniquely qualified to set the agency on a strong organizational footing and realize the mandate of Seattle voters who twice endorsed this new approach to creating permanently affordable housing in the city. A skilled coalition builder and longtime housing advocate, she joins SSHD as it prepares to receive its first disbursement of voter-approved payroll tax revenue, enabling it to begin the acquisition and development of housing across the city. The Board wants to thank outgoing CEO Roberto Jiménez for his tireless work in building a brand new public agency from scratch, setting it on a course to change the city’s approach to its housing and the homelessness crises.

Meet James Mayton, SSH’s new Director of Acquisitions: James (he/him) brings a unique blend of technical real estate finance expertise and a deep personal commitment to housing as a human right. His professional journey is rooted in his own lived experience with housing instability, having grown up in generational poverty in the Tacoma area and navigating foster care and periods of being unhoused during his youth. These early experiences, including living out of his car during his senior year of high school, have fueled his career-long dedication to creating sustainable, equitable environments that foster thriving communities. At SSH James will be sourcing, evaluating, and coordinating real estate deals to help the organization establish its housing portfolio. Prior to joining SSH, James served as the Portfolio Strategist for the Seattle Housing Authority. A first-generation college graduate, James holds an undergraduate degree in Urban Studies from the University of Washington Tacoma and a Master of Science in Real Estate from the University of Washington. Now a resident of Seattle’s Central District, James enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the Pacific Northwest.
