Children receiving a nutritious hot meal at the Asral Center in Ulaanbaatar thanks to the Buddhist Global Relief grant.

In January the capital city's Dental and Oral Health doctors visited the children to assess their teeth. Many people cannot take time off work to get good dental care for their children. The cost can be prohibitive as well.

These are some of the projects we are working on.

There is a rare opportunity to learn about the art scene in Mongolia on Saturday April 14 at 10am. Tickets are still available today.

Seattle Asian Art Museum is presenting this lecture:

Performing Identity in Contemporary Art of Mongolia

Uranchimeg (Orna) Tsultem

Mongolia’s transition into a new democratic nation in 1992 started a dynamic transformation of Mongolian contemporary art. Many artists established their presence in the global contemporary art through exhibitions at the Documenta or the various biennales around the world. Since the socialist taboo on the knowledge of traditions and history was lifted and artists gained freedom of speech, Mongolian artists are actively exploring their distinct identity as the country is establishing its new socio-political positioning in the era of globalization. This talk rethinks multifaceted notions of identity as explored in the works of some prominent contemporary artists in Mongolia.

Here is a photo of the Made in Mongolia workshop, one of our charity's projects to alleviate poverty. Jobs are created mainly for women and their communities. Felting is an ancient tradition in Mongolia (as seen in their ger homes) combined with modern design to make warm and lovely slippers.

At the end of 2022 here is one wonderful story to tell from the summer: Two Spanish engineers drove overland to Asral Center delivering solar panels to be used in family gers. They raised $2,000-3,000. It was not an easy drive as you can see from the attached photos from a Mongolian news website. But they did an extraordinary thing and can be assured that the people are so very grateful! Thank you so much!

Apologies for the lack of translated English text!

Maitreya Charity is very grateful to its grantors. Buddhist Churches of America was founded after 1899 when the first two priests came from Japan to minister to Japanese immigrants and any others.

BCA supported Maitreya when we first set up in 2001 and again in 2020.

The grant provided food for our Hot Meals for children as well as coal for heating their homes. Safety and educational improvements were made at Asral Center's classroom. Coats and boots were supplied to the children. As per an agreement, supplies were given to the local kindergarten so that our Hot Meals Program children could attend without having to try to win a space by lottery.
Supplies were bought for those at the youth prison and the women's prison. Seeds and soil were bought for the gardening project. Other programs were supported by this generous grant.

We thank BCA for supporting our program in Mongolia and for believing in the work we do.

Over 2,500 years ago, the Buddha saw into the cause of human suffering and found a path to a happy and meaningful life. The path of Buddhism is the path to awakening or realization.  We awaken to our true self, which is one with all beings and all things.

It may be challenging to find Mongolian novels translated into English but here is one excellent example available through your independent bookshop.

In Ulaanbaatar you see many Korean restaurants, businesses and people. This book tells stories of North and South Korean residents and of course Mongolian people.

In describing the harsh winter weather, at 20 below zero, a character in one story could avoid pain if holding still. The air is still. But once he moves, the air brushing against his skin would hurt.

This week it will be -25 degrees at night.

Staff prepared the soil and the greenhouses in Gatchurt for the winter. Mongolia is not a traditionally agrarian society so our people teach farming and raising crops to the local people.

Our deepest gratitude to the German embassy in Ulaanbaatar for their help with this work.

Maintaining wells and water purification systems are an ongoing project. Here are workers installing parts of a well in Ondershil in the Gobi Desert a couple of months ago.

This project costs approximately $9,000 every year but is critical to provide safe potable water.
