Washington Sea Grant is running its Skills and Drills course September 28-29 in South Bend, for new or beginning commercial fishermen.

Two days of hands-on work: knot tying, net mending, engine troubleshooting, welding for quick fixes, fiberglass repair, and time on a boat learning basic navigation. This year's course centers on the Dungeness crab fishery.

July brought 283 vessel arrivals to Puget Sound and Grays Harbor, up 12.3% from last July and 14.1% from July 2024, pushing the year-to-date total to 1,589.

Passenger edged out Container for the top spot this month, 67 to 65, with Tanker close behind at 59. Of course this is not the usual order, but since we are in the middle of the busiest cruise season yet here in WA this is what we expected to see.

And just as an extra little fun fact for you we have marked the busiest and slowest days of the month here. July 24 and 28 tied as the busiest days at 13 arrivals each, while four separate days — the 4th, 6th, 21st, and 22nd — sat at just 4. Nearly a 3x swing between the slowest and busiest days of the same month.

Resolve Marine has relocated its Pacific Northwest facility to a new waterfront site on Tacoma's Foss Waterway, adding dock space, a larger yard and upgraded salvage equipment. The company has operated in the region since 2023 and supports shipping companies, port operators and government customers across the Pacific Northwest.

Washington State Ferries' first new vessel in 11 years is officially under construction. Eastern Shipbuilding Group cut the first steel earlier this month for the Wishkah, one of three new 160-vehicle hybrid-electric ferries on order for WSF.

The ferries, designed by Seattle's Elliott Bay Design Group, are scheduled to enter service starting in 2030 and will run the Mukilteo-Clinton and Seattle-Bremerton routes.

The Maritime Administration has awarded $35.2 million to 45 small shipyards nationwide through the 2026 Small Shipyard Grant Program. Six of the awards went to Washington shipyards, more than any other state.

Two of those six are Marine Exchange members. Arrow Launch Service in Port Angeles received $750,000 for a 75-ton Travelift, and Everett Ship Repair received $456,216 for electrical upgrades supporting its new 35,000-ton floating drydock and shipyard-process training.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (Marad) has awarded $35.18 million to 45 shipyards in 24 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands through the 2026 Small Shipyard Grant
