The gathering place at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center is in the works! Check out the amazing students in action, getting a chance to try out some tools that are new to them (and us) and becoming proficient with familiar ones. Thank you for allowing us to reuse these beautiful local western red cedar beams that have been part of the Center for decades—it is a real honor and privilege ⭐️

As a follow up to our last post, we have to state the obvious - we are sending a huge, grateful farewell to our longtime Development Director Erin Ingle. After eight wonderful years of collaboration, community, and fundraising, Erin is moving on to be closer to home with her growing family.

After coming on staff in 2018, Erin has done just about everything you could imagine with Sawhorse - working with youth, building a treehouse, cutting 500 # of gingerbread on a table saw, courting donors, texting with Seahawks, maintaining strong connections with community partners and corporate partners… and so much more.

Erin, we will miss your unbelievable wit, your calm and steady wisdom and support, and the joy you bring to those around you. Thank you for so many wonderful years and we wish you the best in all your endeavors. Everyone - celebrate Erin in the comments below!!

Sawhorse Revolution is looking for an outstanding, experienced Development Director to help grow and sustain the organization’s impact. This role leads fundraising strategy and builds the systems, relationships, and campaigns needed to support the long-term growth of Sawhorse’s youth programs.

The Development Director is responsible for securing and growing financial support across three primary revenue streams: corporate contributions, individual giving, and fundraising events. The position also collaborates with the Executive Director and contract grant writer to support foundation and government funding.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys both strategy and direct relationship-building. We are looking for the right person who also demonstrates a lived commitment to building a better world, as well as a nuanced practice of studying the current one.

More at the link in our bio. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Students are back from winter break and are busy collectively crafting designs for an outdoor gathering space at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center!

This week, used tools of all kinds—clay, pens and paper, 3D modeling, and our ideas—to prepare design schemes fitting for a place of such immense significance. Our design process also opened up questions about how the gathering space can honor elders, support ceremony, and highlight urban Native diversity.

Of the American Indian Movement’s occupations and direct actions, only the 1970 occupation of Fort Lawton (Discovery Park) resulted in the return of land. Daybreak Star is the living example of AIM’s political victories and urgent vision of justice and flourishing Indigenous life. We’re beyond grateful to resume this project with as they carry forward this vision.

Also joining the Sawhorse Revolution team is Jam Sitti! They began their journey into the trades by weeding Himalayan blackberry for eight hours straight in exchange for learning how to forge a blade by hand. This was the beginning of their foray into the world that they wanted to deepen in: the world of skill shares, mutual aid, and community building.

Jam immigrated with their family from Thailand when they were a baby, and growing up, they saw how much their family would work— the knowledge and skills that they held in their former lives in Thailand pushed aside to survive and care for their loved ones. In immigrating here, their parents never had the privilege to align themselves with work that was personally meaningful, and growing up, neither did Jam. From a young age, Jam was always trying to work with their hands. The tactile was something that they could shape with persistence and patience. After a few years at Henrybuilt, working as a professional bench carpenter in a production setting, they learned how to integrate their creativity and attention-to-detail in harmony with efficiency, organization, and systems-thinking.

Stepping into the Sawhorse Revolution Program Coordinator role, Jam is reminded why they value communing with folks who also feel the desire to grow and learn outside of the molds that were shaped for them through systemic inequity. Jam believes that in the process of learning, folks are granted the power of becoming—and because of this, Jam is committed to nourishing and bringing up the next generation of builders. When not building or thinking about building, Jam is likely watching a horror movie, working on a home improvement project, or throwing a bowl at the pottery studio. (she/they)

No performative quotes here. It’s time to activate. We need to channel the brave ones before us and ensure that all of us as a people stand together to fight for civility and human rights.

It’s time to live up to the revolution in our name. Out of your house and into the streets, honor Dr. King!
