Ridicule of stupid Hating-on-Haitian-migrants is NOT the same as supporting Haitians. Yesterday I posted a broken donation link for those of us who want to give a lot more than we want to laugh about this mess. Took it down, but here's a link to the Springfield Haitian community center's website, with a donation button embedded in the front page:

Hey everyone! I totally forgot to post about this earlier, but the Asian American Literature Festival is back, it's FREE and the Bay Area portion of the book FAIR is happening TOMORROW, Sat, Sept 14, from 4-7 pm at the Chinese Culture Center in Chinatown (on Kearny Street on the 3rd floor of the Hilton Hotel)!!

I (Claire Light/Jadie Jang) will be reading and selling (and signing) books so come on through and check out the 20-odd (and even) APIA writers who will be present and presenting! It'll be a fun time!

Yeah, FB removed my post telling you about a new essay from Emily Jiang on the SFWA site. The previous seven essays didn't trigger this automatic spam algo. Fine. Go to the SFWA site and look at the Publishing Taught Me anthology under "Publications." Emily's essay is the one that went up today. Anyone else wants to post the link, great.

We're inviting SFF authors and fans + the whole of the literary community to join us for the 2024 Celebrating Octavia event. This year we're highlighting Butler's 1993 novel Parable of the Sower, which opens in the year 2024, and its sequel Parable of the Talents.

We're asking the community to participate in the celebration by posting a video of you reading Verse 54 of Earthseed: The First Book of the Living, the in-world religious text created by the novel's protagonist. If video isn't your jam, you can join in by posting the text (found below)!

Please include the hashtags (plus any others you want) and, on socials where linking is available, the Carl Brandon website carlbrandon (doot) org. Our homepage has extra info about the campaign, Butler, and the books.

Please post anytime between now and September 5, 2024 on any day or time convenient for you. If you happen to see others posting, please like, share, and boost!

Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing your posts.

**Earthseed: The First Book of the Living, Verse 54**

Choose your leaders
with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward
is to be controlled
by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool
is to be led
by the opportunists
who control the fool.
To be led by a thief
is to offer up
your most precious treasures
to be stolen.
To be led by a liar
is to ask
to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant
is to sell yourself
and those you love
into slavery.

Our freshest essay for Publishing Taught Me, which is SFWA's online anthology: https://www.sfwa.org/2024/06/05/culture-moving-beyond-set-dressing/ Funny and smart!

by Kanishk Tantia This essay is the fifth of eight in the Publishing Taught Me: A SFWA Anthology Project. The first story I ever wrote was unabashedly my own: written with unfiltered childlike enthusiasm, completed within a single draft and, to my eyes, perfect upon completion. Two donkeys killed ea...
