It has been close to six years since hundreds of thousands of Rohingya faced a deadly genocide by Myanmar’s military and fled the country in search of protection and refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh. The Rohingya population has been undergoing persecution, discrimination, arbitrary arrests, and atrocities in Myanmar for over seven decades. Their condition is alarmingly worsening in the squalid refugee camp in Bangladesh, and they are currently facing a significant risk of generational loss due to lack of access to formal education and the loss of their culture, traditions, and language.

About 50 Myanmar Junta Troops Killed in Four Days of Resistance Attacks

Staff Contributor

At least 49 Myanmar junta forces were killed in the last four days as People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) and an ethnic armed organization (EAO) continued to attack regime targets across the country.

Incidents were reported in Karen and Chin states and Sagaing, Magwe and Tanintharyi regions.

The Irrawaddy has collected the following reports of significant attacks from PDFs and the EAO.

Some military casualties could not be independently verified. The Defense Ministry of the civilian National Unity Government (NUG) said its armed wings—the PDFs—and its ally, the Karen National Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Karen National Union (KNU), managed to seize a junta base on Lat Khat Taung Mountain in Myawaddy Township, Karen State last Friday.

A large quantity of ammunition and military equipment were seized in the resistance raid.

The KNU said on Monday that 10 regime forces were killed and 11 injured. A resistance fighter was also killed and four suffered injuries.

Rohingya activists in Bangladesh are calling on the international community to increase pressure on Myanmar following a renewed call at the UN for safe and sustainable repatriation of the persecuted minority to their homeland.
Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar have endured decades of systematic discrimination and persecution, including the 2017 military crackdown that killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands from Rakhine State.

Against Odds, Record 300,000 Rohingya Children Attend First Day of School at Refugee Camp

Staff Contributor

Against the odds of displacement, fires burning down learning centres, and Cyclone Mocha's wrath, classrooms in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh filled up on Sunday with children, excited on the first day of school.

Thanks to expanded education opportunities for teenagers and girls, a record 300,000 children are enrolled for the 2023-24 school year.

The new academic year marks the first time that Rohingya refugee children of all ages will be studying under the Myanmar Curriculum, said a press release issued on Sunday.

Since its launch in 2021, this formal curriculum has gradually been expanded with grades 3-5 and grade 10 opening today for the first time in the Cox's Bazar refugee camps, significantly increasing learning opportunities for both older and younger children.

Cox's Bazar city and various upazilas are also witnessing an increase dengue cases. The dengue situation in Cox's Bazar's Rohingya camps has reached an alarming level: between January and July 10, a total of 1,634 individuals had been infected, resulting in four fatalities during treatment.

Furthermore, the surge in dengue cases is not confined to the Rohingya camps – Cox's Bazar city and various upazilas are also witnessing an increase. Authorities have particularly expressed concern about the escalating spread of the disease in Maheshkhali upazila.

Extensive measures are being implemented to curb the spread of dengue, according to the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner's (RRRC) office. However, despite these efforts, the number of dengue cases continues to rise in the Rohingya camps.

Dr Abu Toha Bhuiyan, RRRC chief health coordinator, highlighted the worsening dengue outbreak in Ukhiya and Teknaf Rohingya camps, particularly in Rohingya camp no 3. The prevalence of dengue remains alarmingly high within the camp.

The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) on Friday detained six people for their alleged involvement in the murder of five Rohingya refugees. They were held from west Rohingya camp 8 in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya upazila.

The detainees are all residents of the camp, said APBn-8 Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Farooq Ahmed. A single shotgun and one round of ammunition have been seized from their possession, the ASP said.

Meanwhile, Cox's Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Rafiqul Islam said so far no case has been filed over the murders.
“A case will be logged if the families wish to file a complaint after the burials,” he added.

On Friday, five Rohingyas were killed in firing by two groups at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar early Friday.

A number of Rohingya youths in Bangladeshi camps find photography a medium to protect their life, culture, tradition and struggle as well as reach out to global audiences.

Speaking to New Age over the phone, young photographers said that they wanted to mobilise opinion globally with their photographs and short videos for a sustainable repatriation to Myanmar from where they were forcibly displaced at different times, largely in 2017.
