The numbers are in...Seattle's C-ID shows up for mahjong! Over the summer, we piloted two intergenerational Mahjong 101 events at Union Station to see what community-building events could look like in these historic public spaces. By the numbers:

🀄 9 raffle prizes offered
🀄 11 organizing partners
🀄 25 Community Mahjong Instructors
🀄 63+ mahjong tables and sets
🀄 100% of attendees surveyed claimed they met someone new
🀄 100% of attendees surveyed said they want more event at Union Station

The Seattle Summer Waterfront Shuttle King County Metro Transit has been busy providing frequent, car-free connections between Seattle Center, Waterfront Park, Pioneer Square, Seattle Stadium, and the Chinatown-International District. The Waterfront Shuttle operates for free, 7 days a week, from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, through September 7.

The CID bus stop is right outside the lightrail station 🤠

University of Connecticut & Wing Luke Museum invite you to a virtual reunion panel discussion on the impact of the Asian American Forum (AAF), a pioneering weekly radio program that aired on public radio in Connecticut from 1990-1996, producing over 300 episodes. 

The Asian American Forum was created and hosted by Dr. Paul Bock and Mrs. Phoebe Ten Yin Ho Bock and was the first Asian American college radio program on the East Coast. The collection represents vital oral history documenting Asian American perspectives primarily from the Northeast corridor, with additional representation from Washington, California, Hawaii, and other U.S. regions. Later in life, the Bocks moved to Seattle and donated their collection of AAF episodes originally recorded on audio tape to the Wing Luke Museum.

Our panelists include Ronald Cheung, Professor Renee Tajima-Peña,Dr. Judy W. Yu, and Grace A. Lou, Esq. Discussion will be moderated by Edward Junhao Lim, former Business & Entrepreneurship Librarian at the University of Connecticut.

What happens when culture, play, and community come together in a historic civic space?

Intergenerational Mahjong 101 brought nearly 600 people to Union Station across two events, transforming the Great Hall into a place for learning, conversation, and connection.

Through a partnership between the City of Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development, Sound Transit, and Wing Luke Museum, the series explored what becomes possible when a historic civic space is shaped by the community it serves.

Mahjong was on the table, but the conversations and relationships that emerged around it were at the center. Experienced players taught beginners, friends reconnected, and new connections formed across generations and cultures. In honor of international Mahjong day, stay connected with our partners like QT Mahjong Club - Seattle to hear about the next mahjong event!
