On October 2, we spent an inspiring afternoon celebrating SAL’s Writers in the Schools (WITS) program! We’re delighted to share that we raised $227,942 (and counting!) for WITS in the school year to come, exceeding our $220,000 goal!

Thank you to the student readers—Asher Sylve, Hanh Dinh Chi, and Anjali Andresen—for amazing us with your words, full of humor, hope, and heart. And to the WITS writers—Ann Teplick, Samar Abulhassan, and Clara Olivo—who worked closely with these students to help discover and develop their creative potential.

That afternoon, Big Picture principal Frederick Butts reminded us of the importance of nurturing a student’s roots so they can grow into their full selves. And former WITS-kid-turned-SAL-staff-member Grace Nakahara showed us what is possible for young people years after they graduate from WITS.

With our community’s support, we’ll continue to creatively engage over 6,500 K-12 public school students this year, and serve 20 out of 40 WITS schools at no cost through our WITS Rewritten initiative.

If you weren’t able to attend but would like to make a gift to WITS, please follow the link in bio. Thank you for supporting WITS!

SAL Backstage 🎤 A tiny slice of a big conversation! Our opening reader and WITS student Anjali Andresen (from Aki Kurose Middle School) - who kicked off the event with her original poem "The Impact of Dreaming" - talks to author Alexis Nikole 🌾🍀 about how to stay true to yourself and never shrink to fit in. Stick around for their shout-out to moms! ❤️

The Youth Poetry Fellowship is in full swing! Fellows meet six times for mentor-led sessions focused on generative writing and community building. Fellows explore new poetic techniques, receive feedback on works-in-progress, practice public reading, and bring their poetry into community—both within the Fellowship, on our stages, and throughout the local literary scene. Thanks for hosting us, Hugo House!

Jeff Martin says, "I’ve been in the book game for a while and even from afar I was aware of SAL and the many great bookstore partners here in town. When deciding to move here, these amenities made it a much easier call." He's new to town, but no stranger to the book world.

Jeff was in conversation with George Saunders about his latest novel, "Vigil" and brought the audience into their easy friendship.

You can still stream the lecture through October 5 at https://lectures.org/event/george-saunders/

⚠️ Scam alert: We've learned that scammers are sending emails pretending to be Seattle Arts & Lectures staff. They're targeting authors and members of our community with fake spekaing invitations and event opportunities, all designed to get money or personal information.

A few ways to protect yourself:

📧 Check the sender's address. All genuine SAL emails come from an .org address. If the domain is anything else, even if the name or signature looks right, it's not us.

🚫 SAL will never ask invited speakers to pay to participate in an event, and we'll never ask for gift cards, wire transfers, or banking details by email.

🎟️ Buy tickets through lectures.org, the SAL box office, or Benaroya Hall (for events at Benaroya). We can't verify or honor tickets purchased from third-party resellers.

🚫 If something seems off, don't reply, click links, or open attachments.

Received a suspicious message? Forward it to [email protected] so we can track and report it. And if you're ever unsure whether a message is really from us, just reach out. We're always happy to confirm.

If you think you've been scammed, contact your bank or credit card company right away. They may be able to stop or reverse a payment. You can also report it to your local police and file a report with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov or the FBI at ic3.gov.

Thank you for helping us keep our community safe. 💙
