Why don't we plant trees during Earth Day? Each year, we officially kick-off the planting season with our Green Seattle Day celebrations in November, and continue to plant through the end of winter in March.

So what makes November the better month to plant trees in Seattle?
🌲The cool, cloudy, and usually rainy days of the fall and winter provide ideal planting conditions here in Seattle.
🌲Fall soil is warm and aerated, and many plants actively grow roots during this time. Some species will continue root growth through our mild winters, and most begin their most vigorous root-growth period in the late winter or early spring.
🌲Planting in the fall and winter also gives us time to better prepare our plants for the dry months ahead; we do this by adding sufficient mulch for nutrients and moisture retention, as well as burlap and cardboard for suppressing future w**d growth.

On this National Gardening Day, we celebrate our Green Seattle Partnership partners who met on Friday April 3rd for our first quarterly Relational Land Care (RLC) event. RLC events are a chance for GSP staff and community partners to have some time together in person to steward the land, build relationships, share skills, and get creative about collaborations.

Together, we removed 2070 square feet of Ivy and learned about each other as organizations and people. The partnership aspect of GSP felt really important to many folks and we celebrated the fact that, at the heart of it, GSP is all about the wonderful people who show up for the land, for community, and for each other.

Big thanks to Joselynn, Heron‘s Nest, and Duwamish Tribal Services for hosting us in the West Duwamish Greenbelt, kudos to our Natural Area Crew for doing a lot of the leg work, and thanks to everyone who made it out.

Did yew know that the Pacific Yew (or Western Yew) can be found in the Washington Park Arboretum? Located in the South end of the Arboretum above Azalea Way, see if yew can spot this this tree! If you don't know what to look for, Washington Start Parks described the Pacific Yew as "a funky little tree that looks like a cross between a giant bonsai and a miniature conifer".

Small, but mighty - the Pacific Yew grows to a height of only 60 feet and have seeds that looks like red cough drops (called an "aril"). While the red, fleshy part is edible, yew definitely do NOT want to eat the seed, which contains lethal alkaloid taxin. Watch me eat it, watch me roll (because I died from eating the seed).

What's new with GSP this month?

In 1970, Earth Day was born out of the idea that human society is responsible for the ongoing destruction of wildlife and the environment, and real change has to be made to protect the earth. It was a time when Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring opened people’s eyes to the effects of pesticides on wildlife. The nation was shocked by the destruction of the Santa Barbara oil spill and the Cuyahoga River fire in 1969. Across the country, 20 million Americans took action through educational events, environmental community service, and marches.

56 years have passed, and the fight for our environment continues—not for lack of progress, but because we need to take care of our planet now more than ever. So this Earth Day, what will you do? The Green Seattle Partnership has compiled a list of 10 events in Seattle for you to take action throughout Earth Month this April.

On February 28, Green Seattle Partnership held its first BIPOC Affinity Group meeting of the year! The Affinity Group kicked off the meeting with a partnership-building affirmation exercise in nature. Afterwards, the group discussed GSP BIPOC partner resiliency and community safety as we looked forward into 2026.

The Green Seattle Partnership BIPOC Affinity Group brings together Black, Indigenous, and People of Color involved in urban forestry and restoration to foster community, share experiences, and guide equitable practices. This group is a key component of GSP’s strategic focus on racial equity, connecting stewards and strengthening community ties to land.
