This year's 6th rider is also the main organizer of this year's ride - Luis Diaz!

Tomorrow is the big day everyone and we have one more rider to introduce so here is Luis Diaz
Luis is a Junior at the University of Washington who is studying medical anthropology & global health and will be applying to Physician Assistant school after his undergrad. In high school he has always tried to give back to his community by tutoring students from all around his community as well as hosting a clothes drive for the homeless. After seeing what Josh, Matt, and Nigel did two years ago, Luis was inspired and wanted to continue biking for young adults with cancer. The biggest reason why Luis wants to ride is because of his high school biology teacher and cross-country coach. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the winter of 2013. She is the strongest person Luis has ever met. Most people would take time off their job to recover, but she did the opposite. She would go to her chemotherapy in the morning and then promptly head to class everyday to teach. On the days she would not be able to come to school she would be upset and let us know because of her dedication to her students. She was able to overcome her cancer and go back to her normal teaching schedule and coaching position, helping her girls' team compete in the 4A Washington State Championship. Seeing all of this taught Luis that he can push through the bike ride because of her selflessness and ability to go to work everyday without complaint. He wants to help those people who are diagnosed with cancer have one less thing to worry about in their life and focus on getting better. On top of that this is now Luis’s second ride for Cycle for Charvat and is excited to get the new riders on board as well as inspire more people to join in on this bike ride. Let’s wish Luis and the rest of crew goodluck tomorrow as they will start with 120 miles the first day.

While we wait for today's blog update, meet another rider!

4 out of the 6 riders have been introduced so let’s make it 5 out of 6. Here is a returning biker from last year, Cesar Daou!
Cesar is an incoming Junior studying Chemical Engineering. Cesar, when asked why he wants to Cycle for Charvat, stated, "The reason I am partaking in this bike ride is because raising money for those in need is very special to me. I was contemplating joining the Greek system, I remember telling myself that I would participate in whatever philanthropy my fraternity held. That summer I visited Theta Chi and met Josh, one of the three members that rode across the country for the foundation. As we spoke about the philanthropy, I realized how amazingly ardent the fraternity was in regard to supporting such a wonderful cause. The riders were not simply biking 100 miles. They chose to partake on an arduous adventure understanding that it will inspire those who are sick and who could donate. After speaking with Josh, I was filled with so much joy because I knew that fulfilling my promise to myself would include carrying out one of my favorite hobbies alongside those of dignity and great principles, all to raise money for those who are fighting cancer. For that reason, I am riding for Cycle for Charvat." Wish him luck once again!

Rider #4!

Rider #4!

Getting closer to the day so let’s introduce another rider Luke Boksem
Luke is an upcoming sophomore at the University of Washington who plans on studying Business Administration. A year ago, Luke was hesitant on joining the Greek system at UW, but was drawn in by the philanthropic benefits that it has on the greater Seattle community. After hearing about Josh, Matt, and Nigel’s bike ride from Anacortes to Boston where they fundraised and raised awareness for the Kyle Charvat Foundation, Luke was determined to help out in any way he could. Luke is biking for his grandparents overseas who both past away of cancer years ago in the Netherlands. This ride will test Luke’s physical endurance and mental strength as he bikes over 50 miles a day, with some days reaching up to 100 miles, for two consecutive weeks. Luke notes that this ride will be extremely difficult but is also uncomparable to what cancer patients go through on a daily basis. Luke is excited by the opportunity to participate in such an incredible event that will provide many young adults with financial support as they continue to face their battle with cancer. Welcome to the team Luke!

We are now 4 days away from our trip. Let us introduce Milan Kassa
He is a junior studying biology at the University of Washington. Inspired by the the accomplishments of previous Cycle for Charvat riders, Milan has decided to hop on the bike and give it a go. In regards to Milan’s resolve he says, “Here at Theta Chi I see an amazing opportunity to raise money for people battling cancer. Being a student at a difficult school myself, I cannot even imagine the challenge of enrolling in class while being diagnosed with cancer. Knowing I can make a difference and help someone by biking down to San Francisco is powerful. I’m especially excited for the experience itself, two weeks on a bike will be hard but I know the memory will last a lifetime.” Let’s wish him the best!
