Before the City of Charlotte Government's North Tryon Street Business Corridor received a makeover, the streetscape was lacking in landscaping and environmental design features seen elsewhere in the City. In some places on the corridor was a top concern: travel lanes were too narrow, there was no space for left turn lanes, and did not have adequate planting strips to buffer from moving traffic. In the final condition, the project significantly improved the pedestrian environment, including revegetating 71% of the corridor using native or adapted and non-invasive shrubs and grasses, plus 198 new trees. For the Bronze Certified North Tryon Business Corridor, the City of Charlotte Government, North Carolina Department of Transportation and the lead design team Kimley-Horn used a approach to prioritize for , , and users. For the neighborhoods and businesses within the corridor, plays a critical role in connecting the residents, business owners, and visitors from the North Tryon area to Center City. In this predominantly Black neighborhood (where 79% residents identified as Black compared to the city-wide average of 33%), transit is the primary mode of travel for 23% of the working population (8 times city-wide average). To enhance transportation choices along the couplet, the City added 2 miles of new 5’ Class A bike lanes, and widened sidewalks to enhance the , including creating a consistent edge zone to separate travel lanes from pedestrians. The City of Charlotte Government's $20.3 million investment in the of the North Tryon Business Corridor's included creating 223 good-paying jobs that were stable despite disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The construction team of Sealand Contractors Corp. & WGR Southeast, LLC 88% of workers from the region within 50 miles of the project and paid 98% of them prevailing wages (even though prevailing wages are not required by State Law in North Carolina).

Project a Catalyst for & : The $20.3 million Bronze Certified North Tryon Business Corridor is a catalyst for in the Graham Street/North Tryon Street . The project transformed the North Tryon Street and North Church Street into a two-way pair and significantly enhanced pedestrian access to promote development. This is a demonstration of the City of Charlotte Government’s commitment to support investment and opportunity, , and facilitate the ability for long-time residents to stay-in-place. The City of Charlotte identified the Dillehay Hills/Atrium Site, located at the northeast end of the project as 1 of 3 catalyst sites for new development. PROJECT OF THE WEEK: Charlotte's Got A Lot! A lot of opportunity, that is! And, two Bronze certified that are a foundational part of the Graham Street/North Tryon Corridor of Opportunity. City of Charlotte Government's Corridors of Opportunity projects cover areas of , , , , , and development, and . As part of Mayor Vi Lyles' Racial Equity Initiative, the City is reinvesting $38.5 million in six key Corridors that are vital to the health and success of Charlotte’s communities of color. The North Tryon Street (2021) & North Church Street (2022) one-way couple forms a critical link in that connect people to the resources and businesses they need to live and thrive. Attention ! We're excited to announce our new digital credential management tool is finally in place. It will significantly enhance your learning and testing experience, reduce emails, add security to your , make verification easier for your employer, and allow you to keep track of your CEUs and credential renewals. If you've participated in the STP program before, we will be issuing your credentials to the email address you used to take the exam. Please check in with us or login to transportcouncil.org to update your contact information! We will be working through hundreds of credentials and renewals in the next few weeks to make sure every STP has current and past credentials in hand, beginning with folks that tested most recently.
