Sunku rasti bent vieną seną Tulpės laikraščio numerį, kuriame nebūtų paminėta Irena Blekys. Aprašyti viską, ką ji per keturis dešimtmečius nuveikė mūsų bendruomenei, nėra lengva, nes ji buvo įsitraukusi taip giliai ir taip įvairiai, kad sunku net žinoti, nuo ko pradėti. Ką mums pasako seni Tulpės puslapiai apie Irenos vaidmenį bendruomenėje? Ir ką sako tie, kurie ją pažįsta dešimtmečiais?
Kai 1981 m. Irena ir Allanas, tuo metu dar visai neseniai atsikraustę į Sietlą, pirmą kartą atėjo į Dukterų vasaros šventę, niekas negalėjo numatyti, kad nuo tos dienos jie taps neatskiriama bendruomenės dalimi. Ir ne tik todėl, kad dalyvaudavo visuose renginiuose. Jie dirbdavo. Organizuodavo, tvarkydavo, galvodavo, kad viskas vyktų kaip reikia. Jokia užduotis nebuvo per žema ar per sudėtinga, viskas buvo daroma su ryžtu, humoru, kūrybiškumu ir tikru atsidavimu.
Čia tik keletas iš daugelio jos nuveiktų darbų. Devintajame dešimtmetyje, dirbdama bendruomenės valdyboje, ji tuo pačiu metu vadovavo Sietlo Baltijos akcijų komitetui ir organizavo susitikimus su politikais bei viešas akcijas Baltijos šalių laisvės labui. Pirmininkaudama 1991–1993 m., pasirūpino, kad bendruomenė pirmą kartą oficialiai įtvirtintų savo tikslus rašytiniame dokumente. Ne vienerius metus ji atstovavo Vakarų regionui nacionalinėje Amerikos lietuvių bendruomenės taryboje. 1996 m. Irena organizavo pirmąjį Follow the Amber Road aukcioną, kuris surinko daugiau nei 30 000 dolerių Vašingtono universiteto Baltijos studijų programai. Programai įsikūrus, ji daugiau nei 20 metų dirbo jos patariamajame komitete, atstovaudama lietuvių bendruomenės požiūriui.
Irena prisidėjo kuriant ir Šeštadieninę mokyklą, ir Lanko stovyklą ir nuo pat pradžių buvo viena iš tų, kurie laiko mūsų kultūrą gyvą. Jos pirmininkavimo metais buvo pasirašyta sutartis su latvių bendruomene dėl Kursos stovyklavietės, kurią nuo tada naudoja Lanko stovykla. Dešimtmečius ji aktyviai dalyvavo planuojant ir kuriant stovyklos veiklą. Giliai išmanydama Lietuvos istoriją ir būdama puiki mokytoja, Irena 2012 m. buvo tarp tėvų, padėjusių įkurti Lino paveldo mokyklą, kurioje savanoriavo daugiau nei dešimt metų. Jos pastangos buvo įvertintos ir Nacionalinės Amerikos lietuvių švietimo tarybos.
Lietutyje Irena žinoma kaip viena iš pirmųjų narių, Vakarų choras mėgaujasi jos soprano balsu, Dukterys džiaugiasi jos kepiniais ir kulinariniais įnašais, Baltijos knygų klubas vertina jos įžvalgas, o Tulpės archyvai saugo ne vieną jos parašytą straipsnį, dažnai su istorine tema. Jau vien tai yra įspūdingas sąrašas, nors ir ne visas!
Tie, kurie Ireną pažįsta, sako: ji tikrai šilta, protinga ir mylinti, sugebanti užmegzti ryšį su kiekvienu, visada priimdama žmones tokius, kokie jie yra, ir matydama geriausia juose. Ji kantri, jautri ir tuo pačiu atkakliai siekianti savo. Jos vadovavimas yra tylus, ji žino, kada ir kaip pasakyti tinkamą žodį. Ji neįtikina kalbomis, o parodo pavyzdžiu. O ta rami, šviesi šypsena? Ji išlieka atmintyje ilgai po to, kai jau užmiršti žodžiai. Štai tokia yra mūsų Irena, ir kokie mes laimingi, Sietlo lietuviai, kad ją turime!
Ačiū, Irena, už viską, ką nuveikėte mūsų bendruomenei. Jūsų pavyzdys įkvėpia mus visus.

When one leafs through past issues of Tulpė Times, it is hard if not impossible to run across a single number that doesn’t include the name of Irena Blekys at least once. Describing Irena’s contributions over the past four decades to the vibrant life of the local Lithuanian Community can be daunting, especially because she has been involved for so long and on so many different levels in helping this community thrive. What can past issues of Tulpė tell us about Irena’s many roles in the community? And what do those who have known her for decades say about their trusted and indomitable friend?
From the moment recent Seattle arrivals and expectant parents Irena and her husband Allan Johnson introduced themselves at a Daughters of Lithuania summer party in 1981, they became instant fixtures at every Lithuanian Community event, and not just by virtue of their attendance but by their wholehearted enthusiastic behind-the-scenes participation in doing whatever work was necessary to make things happen. No job in the service of the Lithuanian Community was too lowly or cumbersome or too complex for Irena to undertake and to master, all the while with determination, humor, creativity, and great thought put into it.
The following are just a few of her numerous accomplishments. In the 1980’s while serving on the Community leadership board, she also chaired the Seattle Baltic Action Committee and helped organize visits to local politicians and demonstrations to advocate for freedom for the Baltic countries. During Irena’s term as Community president 1991–1993, a formal Statement of Purpose documenting goals specific to the local Bendruomenė was adopted. For many years Irena was one of the Western Region’s representatives on the national advisory council of the Lithuanian-American Community. In 1996, Irena had ultimate responsibility for coordinating the first ever Follow the Amber Road Auction, which raised over $30,000 in support of the fledgling UW Baltic Studies Program. After the establishment of the Baltic Studies Program within the UW Scandinavian Department, she served on the department’s Advisory Committee for over 20 years, thereby representing the Lithuanian Community’s perspective.
Irena was instrumental in starting both the Saturday School and the Lankas summer camp and has been a major force in keeping our culture alive and thriving. It was during her term as Community president that a formal agreement was signed with the Latvian Community for use of their campground, Kursa, by Lankas, where the camp has taken place ever since. For decades Irena had a major role in planning and developing the activities of the Lankas Camp. A fountain of information on Lithuania’s history and a gifted teacher, Irena was one of the parents who in 2012 helped establish the Linas Heritage School where she volunteered for over 10 years, and her efforts were recognized by the National Lithuanian-American Education Council.
Lietutis knows Irena as one of its enthusiastic charter members, the Vakarai choir enjoys her lilting soprano, the Daughters of Lithuania regularly savor her delicious desserts and other culinary contributions, the Baltic Book Club benefits from her thoughtful insights, and Tulpė archives reveal numerous articles, many with a historical focus, written by Irena over the past decades. Wow, now that’s already a remarkable resume, even if not all her accomplishments were listed!
On a personal note, Irena’s friends describe her as a truly warm, brilliant, and loving person with a real knack for making connections on an individual level, welcoming to everyone, and finding the best in all of us. Irena is kind-hearted, perceptive yet persistent. Her leadership qualities are the quiet ones, knowing what information to use when and where. She convinces by attraction, by showing how it can be done. And let’s not forget her serene smile! That’s our Irena in a nutshell, and how lucky are we Seattle Lithuanians to have her!
