The Day Benjamin Franklin Accidentally Started Daylight Saving Time

In 1784, Brother Benjamin Franklin—printer, inventor, diplomat, and Freemason—wrote a humorous essay while living in Paris.

In it, he joked that people could save a fortune on candles if they simply woke up earlier and used the sunlight instead of sleeping through it.

He even suggested firing cannons at sunrise to wake everyone up.

Yes… cannons.

Now to be clear, Franklin was not proposing changing the clocks.
He was poking fun at how much daylight people wasted by sleeping late.

But apparently somewhere along the line, someone read Franklin’s satire and thought:

"You know what… instead of cannons… let’s just move time itself."

Fast forward a century and now twice a year millions of people are wandering around half awake, trying to figure out if the stove clock, the microwave clock, and the truck clock are all the same time.

All because a Freemason made a joke about candles in Paris.

So the next time you lose an hour of sleep in March…

Just remember.

Brother Franklin probably thought the whole thing was hilarious.

The Mason's Path

My Brothers hear and heed this charge...
Masonry is not for everyone...
It is not for the faint of heart...
nor for those who cling to ease...
It is for the man who dares to change...
who dares to labor...
who dares to rise...
This path is no idle walk...
It is a journey of self‑mastery...
Every lesson demands humility...
Every trial teaches patience...
Every step calls forth virtue...
You will not be tested by others...
you will be tested by your own conscience...
You will not be measured by titles...
nor by secrets...
nor by influence...
You will be measured by discipline...
by integrity...
by the temple you build within...
Some men seek shortcuts...
Some men prefer comfort...
But the Mason is called to labor without ceasing...
to reflect without fear...
to strive without surrender...
And that is why Masonry is not for everyone...
But for those who take the journey...
the reward is not recognition...
nor power...
nor praise...
The reward is greater...
it is understanding...
it is purpose...
it is the quiet triumph...
of knowing you are building yourself into a living stone...
fit for the eternal Temple of Light...
So, rise Brother...
Rise to the call...
Rise to the labor...
Rise to the Light...
Let your hands be strong...
let your heart be steadfast...
let your life proclaim to the world...
Masonry is sacred...
and you are its Builder.

Brethren,

In Loving Memory of Hans U. Wehl February 17, 1938 – August 23, 2025

Hans U. Wehl, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born on February 17, 1938, Hans immigrated to the United States in 1948 and made Seattle, Washington his lifelong home.

A proud graduate of Garfield High School, Class of 1958, Hans carried his Seattle roots into every chapter of his life. He began his professional journey with I. Lochman and Sons as a sales representative, eventually rising to become a regional vice president for The Longines-Wittnauer Watch Company—a career that reflected his precision, integrity, and timeless charm.

Hans was deeply committed to service and tradition. He was a past master of the Elliott Bay Masonic Lodge and a longtime member of St. John’s Lodge #9 in Seattle. His dedication to craftsmanship and education led him to serve on the board of directors for the North Seattle Community College School of Watchmaking, where he helped shape future generations of artisans.

In 1961, Hans married the love of his life, Sharon Ruth Polishuk. Together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering support. Hans was a devoted member of Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue, Washington, where his faith and values found a spiritual home.

He is survived by his beloved wife Sharon Wehl; his three children: Randy Wehl, Ken Wehl and Robin Wehl Martin and their spouses Nicole Wehl and Robin’s husband Clay Martin; and eight adoring grandchildren: Foster, Max, Hannah, Cara, Jenna, George, Goldie, and Milo. His legacy lives on in their hearts and in the countless lives he touched through his generosity and wisdom.

Hans was also active in the City of Hope, a cause close to his heart. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The City of Hope in Duarte, California, in his memory.

Hans Wehl lived a life of purpose, grace, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
