Last month, classrooms in the Threads of Hope program were filled with active participation.

Participants asked questions, shared ideas, joined group discussions, and supported one another through practical activities.

Learning is strongest when women feel safe, respected, and encouraged to use their voices.

, Executive Director of Sahar Education, joined SEN to discuss a warning from UNICEF : 25,000 Afghan women could vanish from the workforce by 2030 if the current restrictions on girls’ and women’s education continue.

This is not only a warning about jobs. It is a warning about futures, families, healthcare, classrooms, and entire communities.

Afghan girls and women are not asking for charity. They are asking for access, opportunity, and the right to learn. At Sahar Education, we continue to stand with Afghan girls and women by supporting safe learning spaces, skills training, and pathways toward independence.

What is happening in Herat is not an isolated incident. It is part of a wider system of control over Afghan women’s movement, clothing, education, work, and public life.

Women in Afghanistan are being punished for existing in public. Yet they continue to resist with courage, dignity, and an unwavering belief in their right to live freely.

At Sahar Education, we stand with Afghan girls and women who are demanding their rights and building futures despite severe restrictions. Education is one of the strongest forms of resistance. It creates knowledge, confidence, independence, and hope.

Take time to understand what is happening. Share their stories.

The reported arrests of women and girls in Herat, and the reported use of force against those protesting beside them, are not isolated incidents.

They are part of a nearly five-year campaign to push Afghan women out of public life. What began with banning girls from classrooms has grown into restrictions on where women can go, how they dress, whether they can work, and whether they can safely exist in public spaces.

This is not “culture.” This is not “policy.” This is systematic oppression.

We cannot allow this continued siege on Afghan women to be normalized by the media, minimized by world leaders, or buried beneath the next news cycle. Every report of arrests, intimidation, and violence must be met with clarity: Afghan women deserve dignity, freedom, education, and the right to live without fear.

Sahar Education stands in solidarity with the women and girls of Herat, their families, and all Afghans who continue to defend human dignity in the face of repression.

During Eid, many Threads of Hope participants used their tailoring skills beyond the classroom.

Some created clothes for their families. Others produced garments to sell, showing how training can turn into real income-generating opportunity.

This is what practical education can make possible: dignity, independence, and new pathways forward.

In April, Threads of Hope participants made noticeable progress in the quality of their tailoring work. Stitching became stronger. Cutting became more accurate. Finishing became more careful.

These improvements reflect patience, practice, and determination.

When Afghan women have access to safe learning spaces, their talent has room to grow.

Last month, women in the Threads of Hope program showed powerful growth in independence. Many participants are now completing tailoring tasks with minimal guidance, moving through measuring, cutting, stitching, and finishing with growing confidence.

Each skill learned is a step toward more choice, more opportunity, and greater self-reliance.

One of the most meaningful signs of impact this month came from the students themselves.

Participants shared that the Underground TechSheroes classes had restored hope, reopened pathways to learning, and helped them believe in their futures again.

In a time when Afghan girls are being denied formal education, safe learning spaces matter. Hope matters. Continued access matters.
