Today, we honor Juneteenth—a celebration of Black liberation, resilience, and the unfinished fight for justice.

At the Equity in Education Center, we know that true freedom means every Black student has access to the resources, respect, and opportunities they need to thrive. It means dismantling systems that criminalize, underfund, and exclude—and building ones rooted in care, equity, and joy.

We carry the spirit of Juneteenth into our classrooms, coalitions, and campaigns because the fight for liberation starts in our schools.

This survey aims to learn more from principals, teachers, aides, and others in the education community about the interventions that have been most successful and what might be needed to increase adoption. The survey closes May 31st, and a copy of the results will be provided to participants.

Washington is facing a massive budget shortfall this year. Instead of fixing the tax code to ensure the wealthy pay their fair share, massive budget cuts were made to programs that support all our communities, like schools, food banks, and public health.

Washington's school funding model is failing our youth and not meeting its constitutional responsibilities to fund basic education. This leaves local communities with vastly different resources and the need to tax themselves to pick up the tab.

That means schools in low-income communities often can’t afford basics, while wealthier schools fund enrichment through PTAs and local levies.

It’s not fair. It’s not equitable. And it’s failing our students, especially students of color, students with disabilities, and those from rural areas.

Washington has a new tool for IEP teams to help them develop and implement inclusive IEPs, designed for students with extensive support needs. Please join us April 22, from 4 to 5:30 pm, as we give families an overview. Interpretation will be provided in Spanish and Somali.

The online resource is available now, and it centers on meaningfully engaging family and student voices throughout the process of developing an IEP. It begins by building on a vision for each student, challenges limiting beliefs about inclusive education, supports meaningful collaboration with families, and provides a process for implementing inclusive education throughout the school day and across the school year.

Presenters include Jaimee Kidder (PhD, BCBA), Special Education Program Supervisor at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI); Gail Ghere (PhD) and Jennifer Sommerness (Ed.S), both researchers with the TIES Center and the National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO) at the University of Minnesota.

The event is hosted by the Family Engagement Collaborative, a partner in Washington’s Inclusionary Practices Technical Network, and sponsored by Roots of Inclusion and The Arc of King County, along with community partners PAVE, The Arc of Washington, The Arc of Whatcom County, The Arc of Snohomish County, the WA Developmental Disabilities Council, League of Education Voters, WSA Head Start & ECEAP, the Equity in Education Center, Manos Unidas, the Benton Franklin Parent Coalition, the Thurston Mason Parent Coalition, Open Doors for Multicultural Families, the Seattle Council PTSA, Parent to Parent of Washington State, PEACE NW, and more.
