Alternatives to Violence Project - Seattle

Alternatives to Violence Project - Seattle The Alternatives to Violence Project is a national and international program dedicated to healing trauma and reducing violence.

In western Washington state the sponsor for AVP work is Projects for a Civil Society. The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is a training program enabling participants to deal with potentially violent situations in new and creative ways. Workshops are run by our trained facilitators and experiential (not based on lectures). Our workshops use the shared experience of participants, interactive

exercises, games and role-plays to examine the ways in which we respond to situations where injustice, prejudice, frustration, trauma and anger can lead to aggressive behavior and violence. An AVP workshop can help you to:

manage strong feelings such as anger and fear
deal more effectively with risk and danger
build good relationships with other people
communicate well in difficult situations
recognize the skills you already have and learn new ones
be true to yourself while respecting other people
understand why conflict happens

Weโ€™re proud to see Robert Cullen, from Alternatives to Violence (AVP Ireland) and a participant in the Learners as Leaders programme and campaign ambassador, featured on the Change is Possible podcast with Brian Pennie.

In this powerful and deeply honest conversation, Robert shares his personal journey through trauma, violence, addiction, and incarceration and the transformative impact of education, reflection, and support in shaping a new path forward.

Speaking candidly about his experiences, Robert explores the complex realities behind violence, the role of masculinity and shame, and what meaningful rehabilitation can look like. His story challenges assumptions and highlights the importance of connection, understanding, and second chances.

Bernard LaFayette was actively involved in designing and implementing the very first AVP workshops. He was a dynamic and large personality. He is sadly missed.

Bernard LaFayette, the advance man who did the risky groundwork for the voter registration campaign in Selma, Alabama, that culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, has died.
