Tibetan Language and Culture School - TLCS

The Tibetan Language and Culture School is where students attend weekly classes to learn Tibetan language, culture, songs and dances.

It is an endeavor by the Tibetan Association of Washington (TAW), a 501c3 non-profit organization.

Happy First Day of TLCS! On Sunday, September 21st, 2025, we started our first day of school for the new school year!

Tibetan Language and Culture Class of Seattle organized a welcome picnic for new and former students and bade farewell to Ghen Lharik Dhakpa la. Parents, students, and community members conveyed their thanks for his more than 7 years of service to the community in preserving Tibetan culture and traditional performing arts. 🎶 🙏🏽

On Sunday, our youngest students enjoyed a SEEL (social, emotional, ethical learning) module on defining kindness. We discussed a read-aloud story, created a word map, then shared ideas for a one sentence definition for kindness. (We also played Simon says!)

We are so proud of our amazing young scholars: we discussed these dualities relating to kindness…

➡️ What does it mean to be kind on the outside, without inner kindness within your heart?
➡️ what are kindly intended words, when received as unkindness?

Families are to ask their student which one sentence definition is their favorite, and why.

Students from TAW’s Tibetan Language and Culture School learned about plants and exotic animals today at the Earth Day event hosted by the city of Sammamish.

On Sunday February 2, 2025, His Eminence, Avikrita Vajra Sakya Rinpoche visited Tibetan Language and Culture School. Students enjoyed a meaningful and fun interaction with Rinpoche and thanked Rinpoche for his kind gifts.

On Wednesday, May 22nd, TLCS students participated in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month celebration at Shoreline Community College. TLCS students performed a modern re-mix pop song and a traditional dance performance.

Sunday, May 19th TLCS activities included: Picture Day, basic Tibetan language courses, Tibetan Opera Ache Lhamo class by guest teacher Ghen Tsering Drolkar la, Tibetan history classes by Gen Tashi Tsering la, birthday celebration for TLCS alumna Rehwa Nyatsatsang and a big thank you to community snack sponsor Thupten Jampa la and Wangdu Dolma la family.

On May 12th, our Tibetan Language and Culture School (TLCS) celebrated Mother’s Day and Teacher Appreciation Day at Shoreline Community College. Throughout the year, TLCS mothers and teachers spend so much time teaching basic Tibetan language and cultural lessons to the next generation. Thank you to Lynnwood Trader Joes @ Captain Jerome Cruzen, for donating the lovely flower bouquets💐 !

On May 5th, we awarded prizes to recognize top student artists 🎨 for their Earth Day themed posters. Genla, Dhakpa Lharik la, taught Tibetan Opera Classes. 🎶 Community Engagement Snack Sponsor was Namgyal Tashi la. Kurt Smith took these wonderful photos. Thank you all!

On April 28th TAW members Tenzin Dhargyal and Tenzin Choenyi presented TLCS level II students and parents about Social Emotional and Ethics (SEE) Learning. Topics included: compassion, cultivating awareness, and engagement tools. They also played games to easily understand the whole system of social emotions. Students really enjoyed the class!
Thank you Tenzin Dhargyal and Tenzin Choenyi for representing us at the 3 day workshop (April 12-14) on SEE Learning provided by Emory University Professor Dr. Lobsang Tenzin Negi, Professor Tsondue Samphel and Research Scientist Tenzin Sonam in Portland, Oregon. Level I students enjoyed SEELearning activities earlier in April with SEEL 101 certified instructor Tsering Yuthok Short, where themes of kindness, interconnectedness, and resourcing positive memories involved games and drawing a picture of an extra happy moment in their lives.

TLCS will be hosting a drive for the Treehouse for Kids Foster Care organization at the upcoming Losar party on February 17th. Treehouse for Kids is a nonprofit that works to help make sure that the kids in foster care have all the opportunities and support to help them achieve their dreams. We will be accepting body wash, deodorant, menstrual products, diapers (sizes 3-5), curly hair products, and lotion (cocoa or shea butter preferred). We will also be accepting cash donations to support buying these products.
As a part of our lesson to the kids to teach morals and empathy towards others in an effort to build a pattern of generosity and caring to others, they have selected this organization to help for Losar. 🙏🏽
