Young Women Empowered (Y-WE) Providing intergenerational and intercultural creative leadership for young women Y-WE provides young people with the tools to reach their full potential.

Young Women Empowered (Y-WE) is a nonprofit that serves young women, trans, & non-binary people ages 13-26. We host after-school programs, events, & summer camps that focus on leadership development, skill building, creativity, & mentorship. Our goal is to create a community of belonging where young people can be their authentic selves. We center BIPOC and LGBTQ+ youth, and our mentors and staff a

re reflective of the youth we serve. We do everything we can to set the next generation of leaders in our community up for success!

This fall, young people are invited to spend Saturdays at Marra Farm harvesting, planting native plants, caring for the garden, painting, and exploring the connections between food, community, and our environment through hands-on activities.

This year has asked a lot of Y-WE.

Like many nonprofits, we’ve had to stay flexible and creative while the needs of young people and families continue to accelerate. Through it all, we’ve stayed clear on what matters most: keeping Y-WE free, accessible, and rooted in care.

Because of this community, Y-WE kept showing up.

This year, we expanded in-school programming, strengthened youth wellness support, and sustained the programs, mentors, and staff that make Y-WE what it is.

As we get close to the end of our fiscal year on August 30, we’re asking our community to help us finish strong and carry this work into the new fiscal and school year ✨

For many young people, Y-WE starts with one summer camp. Then, little by little, they keep finding their way back.

They join school-year programs, build friendships, connect with mentors and facilitators, attend community events, and grow more confident in who they are and what they care about.

Over time, we see youth step into their passions, advocate for causes close to their hearts, and sometimes return as mentors themselves, helping welcome the next generation of Y-WE youth.

For a lot of Y-WE youth, the word “leadership” can feel intimidating.

It can sound formal, like something you need a title for, or something only certain people get to claim.

Y-WE invites young people to see leadership differently.

Sometimes leadership doesn’t start with confidence or a title. It starts with someone listening, with a space where you don’t feel rushed, where you feel accommodated and taken care of.

For Fatra, Y-WE was one of those spaces. She started by sharing poetry, and over time, she began stepping into leadership in a way that felt natural to her. Now, as a leader with the Seattle Student Union, Fatra carries those early experiences with her.

Your support helps make moments like this possible: a first poem shared out loud, the first time speaking up in a group, the first time a young person tries using their voice and sees its impact.

When people think of Y-WE, they might think of camps, programs, mentors, and youth gathering in community.

And yes, that is a big part of what we do.

But Y-WE’s care also reaches beyond one program moments. Through our holistic care model, Y-WE connects young people with free, culturally affirming therapy and wellness support through the Healing Justice Collective.

This is part of how we show up for youth: with therapy access, direct aid, trusted relationships, and care that reminds young people they do not have to move through hard things alone.

Did you know that 50% of our youth’s first Y-WE program is a summer camp?
Summer is one of the most joyful and active seasons at Y-WE. Right now, youth are biking, swimming, creating, building outdoor skills, trying new things, and finding connection through summer camp programs.
As one youth shared: “Y-WE isn’t just ‘free programs’ or just another nonprofit. It’s a community. Y-WE really shows up for youth.”
As we close out this fiscal year, we’re working toward a goal of raising $72,000 by August 30.

Big news for Y-WE and youth across Washington ✨

We’re honored to share that Young Women Empowered is part of Allen Family Philanthropies’ $5 million investment in Creative Youth Development across Washington state, the largest single investment in CYD in Washington state history.

This funding supports a cohort of 10 organizations across 11 counties, all working to strengthen creative spaces where young people can build skills, express themselves, and grow their leadership.

This investment supports our Creative Youth Development work, including Y-WE’s Create and Grow programs. As Silvia Giannattasio, Y-WE’s Executive Director, shared:

“We are deeply grateful to Allen Family Philanthropies for investing in the creativity, well-being, and leadership of young women and gender expansive youth. Through Y-WE’s Create and Grow programs, young people build artistic skills, explore connections to land and culture, and discover new ways to express themselves and engage with their communities. This partnership helps ensure that youth in greater Seattle have access to creative spaces rooted in belonging, mentorship, and community care – where they can develop their voices and experience their creativity as a force for change.”
