Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) members have rejected proposed contracts with Boeing and voted to authorize a strike. "Membership has made clear that the current offer falls short, and without significant improvements to the last offer, they are prepared to strike."

Katheryn Durkee, a materials and process engineer who also serves on the bargaining team, says Boeing's decisions are leading to staff turnover.

"In order to defy gravity and to deliver to our customers, we really need to have that top talent in place year over year. ... You need people who are willing to be there to learn the very specialized skills that we have," Durkee said.

Members of one of Boeing’s biggest unions have rejected a contract offer from the company and have authorized a strike if further talks fail.

Parallels are emerging to a lengthy strike by 33,000 Seattle-area hourly factory workers in late 2024, shortly after Ortberg joined the company. Members of IAM District 751 ignored a recommendation by union leaders and voted overwhelmingly to reject Boeing’s initial offer, embittered by a previous 10-year contract that stripped away pensions and provided a paltry 8% wage increase.

SPEEA’s negotiating team said it similarly encountered an undercurrent of mistrust of Boeing management, a holdover from the company’s union-busting tactics under prior CEOs.

Company withdraws 2026 pay increases it had promised for early approval of deal
