The Inlandboatmen's Union of the Pacific (IBU) is one of the largest maritime Unions on the west coast. Founded in 1918 primarily by ferryboat workers in San Francisco, the IBU has grown into a union which represents about 4,000 workers on both passenger carrying and commercial vessels that sail along the Pacific coastline and to Hawaii.

We had our first meeting with the Oregon Global Solidarity Committee, and one of their first requests is for all unions to help raise awareness by sharing this video about the garment workers Nike uses overseas to produce their products. It highlights the struggles these workers face and the importance of standing in solidarity with them. Please take a moment to watch and share.

Dear IBU Members,
Ballots were counted today in our National office, regarding a change to our monthly dues rate cap.
To revisit; our Convention delegates proposed and passed an adjustment to our maximum dues rate from $120.00 to $140.00 per month in November, with no change to our base rate or to our percentage formula.
As a democratic union and per our constitution, this was properly submitted to a ballot of all full-book members.
This proposed adjustment has passed, with the final ballot count as follows:

Ballots received: 515
Ballots challenged: 7
Ballots counted: 508
Ballots in favor: 261
Ballots opposed: 247

We thank every one of you who participated in this process, and we thank every one of our members generally, while we continue our critical work as a Union and as part of a broader movement on behalf of all working people.
What we do matters, but what we do together matters so much more.

In solidarity,
Your IBU Leadership Team

ILWU Continues to Stand in Solidarity with Railroad Unions Following Announcement of Tentative Agreement

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 15, 2022) – Following the announcement of a Tentative Agreement between the nation’s Railroad Unions and the private companies that employ them, ILWU International President Willie Adams reiterated the union’s support and solidarity with railroad workers nationwide:

ā€œRailroad workers have an important, often hazardous job, and they deserve to have a good collective bargaining agreement. It is unfortunate that a small number of private companies brought the entire nation to the brink of a strike before reaching a Tentative Agreement with the workers who dedicate their lives to moving the nation’s cargo. Our Brothers and Sisters on the railroads have endured an enormous amount of unnecessary stress as they’ve stood up for good jobs, and Longshore workers in all 29 West Coast ports continue to stand in solidarity with them.ā€

The ILWU Coast Longshore Division represents 22,000 dockworkers in all 29 ports on the U.S. West Coast.
