Seattle has come a long way when it comes to biking.

Over the past 15 years, we’ve gone from celebrating Seattle’s first neighborhood greenway to being able to ride from the Ship Canal Trail to the waterfront and all the way to Alki without mixing with car traffic.

Those improvements didn’t happen by accident. They happened because neighbors, advocates, and community members organized, showed up, and pushed for safer streets.

In a new guest post for Seattle Bike Blog, Clara reflects on how far Seattle’s bike network has come, the critical gaps that still need to be connected, and what comes next under a new administration.

It’s a thoughtful look at the progress we’ve made and the work still ahead to build a bike network that works for everyone.

A powerful perspective on why Lake Washington Boulevard Bicycle Weekends matter — especially for South Seattle communities that have historically had less access to safe public space and recreational infrastructure.

This line especially stuck with us:

“We deserve the sound of water without the sound of engines, & to let our children run ahead of us without calculating the risk.”

And this question gets to the heart of the conversation Seattle is having right now:

“Who is public infrastructure actually for? Fast through-traffic? Or the grandmother walking slowly with her grandchildren? The teenager learning to ride? The dad pushing a stroller?”

Lake Washington Boulevard Bicycle Weekends create space for families, elders, kids, runners, walkers, rollers, and cyclists to safely enjoy one of Seattle’s most beautiful public spaces together. That matters.

John Aaron writes that closing Lake Washington Boulevard to through-traffic isn’t anti-car — it's a long-overdue investment in safety, equity, and public space for South Seattle.

Seattle already knows how to make streets safer. The challenge isn’t a lack of plans or policies — it’s whether we have the political will to redesign our most dangerous streets fast enough to save lives.

In our new op-ed in the The Seattle Times, we argue that Vision Zero will require more than small tweaks around the edges. It means backing major street redesigns that prioritize safety for people walking, biking, rolling, and taking transit.

“If Seattle’s new mayor directs the department to get Vision Zero back on track, what could that look like? It would look like giving the department backing to overhaul our most dangerous streets — not just tinker around the edges.”

The solutions to keep Seattleites safe while traveling on our streets are known. The problem has been a lack of political will — at all levels of government.

A Bike Bus to Salmon Bay K-8 is happening every Friday morning in May!

Students and families can join a fun, family-friendly group ride to school, with volunteers helping lead the route and create a safer, more joyful trip to class. Riders can join at the start or hop in along the way.

If there’s enough support, organizers hope to make this a regular Friday tradition next school year too.

Big ideas for people-first streets are gaining momentum across Seattle.

On Capitol Hill, Central Seattle Streets for All is working to transform Barbara Bailey Way into a more welcoming, pedestrian-centered space that builds on the success of the weekly farmers market and creates a true neighborhood gathering place.

Meanwhile, the U District is preparing to pedestrianize a block of The Ave this summer with seating, music, games, and programming designed to bring people together.

These projects are about more than a single street. They point toward a bigger vision for Seattle: vibrant pedestrian spaces at the heart of every neighborhood.
