Hi Everyone,
Thanks to support from 4Culture, we have a new website!

In September, as a part of the Korean American Historical Society's Collective Memory Project, we collected documents, photos and artifacts from members of the Korean community. Each historical item reveals the many facets of Korean immigration to America.

Marion Kinsler was a Presbyterian Missionary to Korea 1930-1949. The collection includes a bojagi, a woman's jeogori, a pair of socks, small hand-painted paper cutouts, and a watercolor scene of girls playing on a see-saw.

Also included are two sports medals from Kyunggi High School, given to her as gifts from Han, Kwang Hee (한광희), one of her students.

Special thanks to Deborah MacKinnon, of the Kingston Historical Society for researching these items and turning them over to us. Friends of her husband rescued these from a nursing home dumpster back east, and then she took the time to research their provenance and locate us.

Marions siblings were also well-known missionaries to Korea. More information about the Kinslers in the comments!

About Korean American Historical Society
Founded in 1985, Korean American Historical Society (KAHS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the collective memory of Korean Americans through collecting, maintaining, and transmitting the heritage and achievements of Koreans living in the United States and abroad. KAHS collects oral histories, photographs and memorabilia regarding the Korean diasporic experience. KAHS has published journals, monographs and books, and has held presentations resulting from this collection. KAHS is in the process of building a digital archive of our records in order to make this information more widely available. KAHS is housed at The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience.

Job Description
KAHS is seeking a Consultant who can support our Collections Care project by conducting an inventory of our collections/artifacts (physical and digital), draft a collections care plan which incorporates a digital archive plan and, as time permits, digital archival to train volunteers on the process. Supplemental activities may also include cataloging and indexing, data management in digital repository software, rights management, and other duties as needed and agreed upon.

We anticipate the Collections Care project will encompass approximately 5 months from ex*****on of a contract, from March 2020 through July 2020 for a total of 100 hours at $25 an hour, no benefits. An average weekly schedule could consist of 20-25 hours of work. Hours of operation may need to coincide with business hours of the Wing Luke Museum (Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm), as well as that of available volunteers for the purposes of conducting inventory of Korean language materials.

We are seeking a consultant, an archivist, or a recent graduate with a degree in museology, library and information science, or archival studies. The ideal candidate will be self‐directed, detail‐oriented, and comfortable with technology. Knowledge of Korean language and Korean American history is welcome, but not required.

Apply
To apply for the position, please send your resume and cover letter to [email protected]. KAHS will start reviewing applications starting March 9, 2020 until the position is filled. All applications will be held in confidence. All submissions and questions should be sent via email – no phone inquiries please.

The Collections Care Project is funded, in part, by a grant from 4Culture.
